Best RPG for iPhone!
If you loved Might and Magic's World of Xeen, the Eye of the Beholder I, II, and III, and the Ultima series, you will definitely love this highly engaging turn-based RPG. It has a largely non-linear format which is great for those who enjoy exploring coupled with a fantastic soundtrack and lovely graphics. Fun additions to this typical RPG are the ability to pick herbs to make your own potions, enchant your own gear, and play a Magic the Gathering sort of card game at the inns and win (or lose) money. A perfect bridge between the old style RPG and the new, modified for the iPhone (so don't expect extensive map or quest trackers) but still nonetheless a steal at $5.99, and good for hours and hours of thrilling gameplay. Highly highly recommended.
The First Great RPG for the iPhone
This is one of those games which I bought knowing that I will enjoy it. I've personally enjoyed turn-based rpgs in the veins of Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Hack by TSR games. Redshift has done an awesome job of bringing this experience on to the iPhone. The RPG system is very similar to the Elder Scroll series, using a similar stat/skill system, so fans of the Elder Scrolls series should not miss this. The sprite based graphics are adequate for the system and they definitely look better in game than on the screen shots.
I'll be looking forward to the next game by Redshift (and I hope it's an expansion pack for The Quest :-)
Finally, a solid old-school RPG!
The iPhone interface is, admittedly, better suited to puzzlers than to RPGs, and this is probably why it has taken so long for a good old-school RPG to surface. I've bought many good games from the app store; The Quest is among the best. It has a surprising amount of depth, and it brings me back to my Might and Magic-playing days. The question a potential buyer has to answer is whether he or she actually enjoys games of this genre. If the answer is yes, then The Quest will not disappoint.
