Little improvement and big slide backwards.

I’ve been a ST digital user for quite a few years and seen a fair bit of iterations for the app. As for the latest update probably a few months back with the black background, I felt that priorities for the app was misplaced. Too much emphasis was placed on the UI of the display, bold headlines, bigger fonts, black background, etc. However, the user experience of the app greatly suffers. Only headlines are captured in the landing pages and the whole app felt ready word heavy and with much reduced visual elements to guide the reader. The scrolling of the page stutters tremendously that it becomes unbearable to read. The basic performance metrics of the app were not met and it seems like this major update was released in haste. I sincerely hope that the team would take these lessons and deliver a much improved app with better usability considered.

Don’t bother to install the app

Pretty looking app but not readers friendly.

1. Read the news directly from the website. Don’t bother with the app. I signed in to the app as a subscriber but I still need to sign in the second time to read the “subscriber” only articles. Why double the effort.

2. So much ads. Why bother to be a subscriber if you are going to be bombarded with as many ads as a non subscriber?

3. Cumbersome navigation. You need to close the page (top right corner) in order to jump back to the main page. Scroll down, then you need to jump up after reading the article. The reading flow getting very disruptive after awhile and then i would leave the app.

4. ST writing is nothing special. The articles are not thought provoking, unique or meaningfully moral uplifting. Most of the time it’s all about consumption or money making. Should have more articles about celebrating the best of humanity.

Clunky app

This version is hardly an improvement on devices using IOS 14.4:

1. The PDF version keeps quitting after navigating a few pages.
2. Navigating the Home and Latest sections is not as seamless as before.
3. The PDF version does not have a “Reader” view of individual articles which would make reading on the phone easy on the eyes. Several foreign online newspapers are a pleasure to use because they have such a feature. Just click on an article on a PDF page and a reader-friendly version of the article appears.
4. The app has a clunky feel and the typography in the HOME and LATEST views makes inefficient use of space.
5. The only reason I keep using the app is the need to stay informed on local and regional news.

Sadly, since I last posted the review above, the user experience has not improved. One additional peeve is that in the non-PDF view, an ad is placed at intervals of every two paragraphs, making it impossible not to trigger it inadvertently and be taken out of the page. If SPH thinks it can fool its advertisers into thinking that readers are actually taking in the contents of the ad, it is mistaken. I certainly make it a point to quickly close the ad. My reading experience, meanwhile, suffers.
What a shame!

SPH can learn from other publications. Bloomberg and NYT are a joy to read online.
