Are you old enough to remember the golden age of the arcade? For us the thrill was in giant sprites, the brain jangling wall of sound effects and watching a game guru ace a machine when our strategy was plain old button mashing.
I Am The Hero brings back some of those old feelings. It’s an over-the-top pixel art brawler with a cleverly skewed viewing angle that makes the retro art style appear 3D.
Even before you really know how to play, you can fire-off amazing combos. You send enemies flying across the screen and land a dozen punches and kicks mid-air before they fall to the floor.
As you play you’ll realise there’s more to it, though.
This isn’t a one-on-one fighter. Button-mashing won’t get you far enough when you are up against four enemies. You have to nail timing, learn how to pull off special moves and feel out which combos give you the upper hand.
After each level you also unlock a new character, with their own fighting style and set of moves. Dig deep enough and you’ll find a treasure trove of tricks.
It’s not pure brawling either. A fun story plays out through I Am The Hero, aided by a charming translation from the original Chinese.
So, roll up your sprite sleeves, gel up your pixel quiff and get brawling.
