Notifications not working

I often don’t get any notifications about new messages. I have to open the app and the chat and only after that I can see new messages appear. Messages that are a few days old. I have iPhone now but it was also happening on my Samsung. My apps are always updated so I don’t think the issue is there. Please fix it.
