The ship was equipped with scientific instruments for observation and measurement. On this journey Darwin kept copious notes and collected samples of plants, animals, rocks and fossils. As a naturalist he sought to explain the great diversity of life that he found. His research lead him to a comprehensive theory that would become the foundation of modern biology.
