While most zombie games will kit you out with military-grade kit to survive an undead apocalypse, in Kung Fu Z you need nothing more than jean shorts, a tank top and lightning fast limbs to save the world.
When the evil Dr Z interrupts your morning meditation by unleashing his army of zombies, it’s up to you to use your martial arts skills and beat the world back into shape.
Gameplay is simple in this side-scrolling 2D world: zombies will come at you from left and right and you’ll have to do some rapid tapping to dispose of them.
Your aim is to push forward, facing waves of the undead until you reach a final boss for each area of the city. Each area will have progressively higher numbers of zombies and bosses to fight, with the length of the level and the challenge of staying alive increasing accordingly.
Every zombie you send back to the grave will drop coins, and you’ll have to use them to upgrade your clothing if you want to survive. Better pants increase attacks, stronger shirts increase your health and new headgear will unlock and strengthen special abilities.
Boss zombies will sometimes even drop brand new gear, and your special abilities will give you attack boosts when the waves of enemies are at their most overwhelming. If things get really bad, you can also spend some gems on a magic scroll for a powerful boost.
With its bright and colourful 8-bit art style and upbeat soundtrack, Kung Fu Z is a refreshing and nostalgic take on the increasingly dull and dark zombie fighting genre.
