We all know that Spain is home to an abundance of sun, beautiful beaches and delectable cuisine. But did you know that it’s also home to a collection of valleys, mountains and spectacular landscapes loved by trekking fans the world over? Here are some of the best routes, curated by the Wikiloc community.

1. Ibones de Anayet (Aragonese Pyrenees)

A stone’s throw from the French border lies a route that runs through some of the region’s most beautiful glacial lakes. This trek covers a distance of approximately 10 kilometres, with an uneven terrain of 600 metres that leads to the Anayet Peak. There you can sunbathe and relax on the fluffy meadow grass while enjoying fairy-tale views.

2. Teide National Park (Tenerife)

In addition to being a World Heritage Site, Teide National Park is a real-life film set – a host of sci-fi and fantasy movies were shot here. But unless you’ve packed a flying saucer that can carry you to Mount Teide’s summit, be prepared: this isn’t the easiest route. It’s 22 kilometres in total, but you can join at various points if you’d prefer a shorter trek. The good news is that once you reach the top, which stands at 3,715 metres, you can say you’ve reached the highest point in Spain.

3. Río Borosa (Andalusia)

The Borosa River is undoubtedly one of Sierras de Cazorla Natural Park’s most beautiful areas. On this route, you’ll explore a forest full of yew, holly and mountain elm trees, as well as magnificent waterfalls and dark tunnels that’ll keep you cool on a hot day. It takes around 10 hours and covers almost 24 kilometres, and is such a feast for the eyes, you won’t want it to end.

4. Naranjo de Bulnes (Asturias)

The leafy forests, wild coastline and steep mountains of the northwest region of Asturias are best showcased by the ascent to Naranjo de Bulnes. This route is almost 13 kilometres long, but the limestone peak is worth the effort. It presides over the famous Picos de Europa, and touring its base from all angles and admiring its imposing presence is a memory you’ll cherish forever.

5. Aigüestortes National Park (Catalonia)

Shaped by the water that runs through it, the Aigüestortes National Park and Lake San Mauricio trek is surrounded by meandering rivers and lakes in nearly every shade of blue and green imaginable. The trek can be completed in around eight hours – although it’ll probably take more, as you’ll want to stop every five minutes for photos.
