Being apart doesn’t mean we can’t stay connected. With so many apps that allow us to celebrate and support each other, we want to inspire you to get creative in sharing special moments with your friends and family—wherever they may be.

Go the extra mile and brush up on your video-editing skills so that you can show your loved ones your most memorable and candid moments at home.

We’ve put together this step-by-step guide to help you create wonderful homemade videos using the video-editing app, InShot. You’ll find some handy tips to inspire your videos, whether you’re thinking about compiling clips of meal prepping or funny moments with your pets. Remember: You have creative control! You may also want to think about telling a nostalgic story, so dig up any old videos you may have and create a compilation that will make everyone smile.

Once you’ve come up with your idea, think about adding sound and animated effects, text, stickers, and GIFs to your footage. We’ve shared some of our favourites to get you started. Happy editing!

Step 1: Select Your Footage

Under Create New, tap on Video and select the videos you want to use from your Camera Roll. Once you’re happy with the selection, you can change the order and trim your videos by tapping on the white markers that separate each video segment. The white markers allow you to add transitions (our favourites are in the Super category, which has lots of dramatic and super zoom effects).

Step 2: Add Sound Effects

If there’s a funny moment in your video that you want to emphasize, scroll through to where it happens, then tap on the music icon, choose Effects > Laughter and select your preferred sound effect (our favourite is Cartoon laughter).

Tip: Take some time to explore all the effects available in InShot; if you’d like to add a song, you can import the one you want from Apple Music or check out the Featured tab for available in-app tracks. Feeling ambitious? Tap the Record icon and add your own commentary to give your footage a mockumentary feel.

Step 3: Layer in Special Effects

To add special effects, drag your finger to the point in the footage where you want to make an edit, then tap Filter > Effect and choose from a range of categories (our favourite is the Noise effect under the Glitch tab, which invokes the retro feel of old camcorders).

If you want to edit, modify, or delete an effect, go to the Effect bar below the video and make any necessary adjustments.

Step 4: Add Text, GIFs, and Stickers

Whether you’re looking for a simple caption effect or you want to draw attention to something in particular, such as the sizzling sound of your meal, tap on Text and type in your message. Pinch to adjust the size and drag to adjust the position. You can also tap on the Sticker icon to select quirky animated stickers and GIFs.

Tip: If you’d like to animate your text, a menu bar will pop up when you’re typing that allows you to change the colour, alignment, and font style. Tap on the three circles on the far right to choose from several animation effects.

Ready to showcase all your video-editing talents? Why not invite your friends and family to do the same and start a home-video challenge, with everyone sharing their creations via InShot for lots of laughs and entertainment.
