“Just do it right away.” That was the response we received when we asked Artem Nevmyvaka, Sergei Loginov, and Serghii Kovalenko for their advice on creating TikTok videos. It turns out their hilarious—and highly successful—posts are totally unplanned; they just improvise, hit record, and let the camera roll.

But then what else would you expect from three entrepreneurial people who were able to dust themselves off after disaster and turn it into opportunity?

The three men (Nevmyvaka and Kovalenko are Ukrainian, Loginov is Russian), had been running a tourism business in Vietnam for five years —until 2020, when the pandemic put a stop to travel. They then rolled their sleeves up and, using equipment they already had, opened an ice cream shop called Kem Banh Que.

Their ice cream could be described as a type of fried ice (that’s ice, not rice). A mixture of ice and milk is spread thinly onto a pan—a refrigerated one—and after a few minutes of stirring, the ice cream is ready to serve with fruit, sauce, or other toppings. It’s the perfect refreshing treat for the balmy climate of Nha Trang, the city where they live.

But perhaps the most popular accompaniment to their product is the TikTok videos they create for their brand. The amusing short skits, filled with humour and unusual ingredients, caused their views and likes to skyrocket. Ice cream with instant noodles? Or chilli? They may not be your go-to toppings, but watching these three concoct them sure is entertaining.

Without a script—or any video creating or editing experience—they take inspiration for the comical shorts from their environment and the comments in TikTok, where the Translate feature helps them to quickly understand Vietnamese.

The cherry on top of these ice cream videos? A great sense of humour.

After filming their footage on an iPhone, the team edits it in CapCut and adds music, recommended to them by their Vietnamese friends. “We believe that music in a video is [the reason for] half of its success,” explains Kovalenko. Then, once they’re happy with the finished video, they post it in TikTok.

Here are their top three tips for using CapCut to create videos:

  1. Use Split and Crop. Apply this feature to unused frames to make the video interesting. And be sure to cut any dull moments.
  2. Ace your pace. The Speed function helps to make the video more dynamic. On average, we speed up some frames by 1.5 times.
  3. Pick a popular template. Head to the Trends category to try out templates. This can help your videos achieve higher views.
