Thanks for getting in touch and sharing your feedback. Delighted to hear that you're a Portal fan but at the same time we're really sorry about this bug and any frustration it may have caused!

From what you've mentioned, it sounds like this is a known macOS Sonoma bug which we've reported to Apple.

In a nutshell, if you have Portal's "Sync Wallpaper" feature 'on' AND you have your desktop set to one of the new Landscape / Cityscape / Earth / Underwater / Sonoma wallpapers or one of the Dynamic Wallpapers, then when you stop playing Portal's motion visuals it will not revert to the one that you had selected - which sounds like what you've described.

Until Apple fix the bug, there are a couple of workaround options:

(1) Use Non-Affected Wallpapers
You can choose a default wallpaper that is not one of the affected wallpapers, mentioned above (please note that custom pictures you add and the built-in “Pictures” category are not impacted and are unaffected); or

(2) Turn Off Portal's Sync-Wallpaper Feature
You can turn off Portal's "Sync Wallpaper" feature - you can do so, by opening the Library in fullscreen, selecting "Settings" in the Menu Bar > "Desktop" > toggle off "Sync wallpaper".

The one that I would recommend is just turning off Portal's "Sync Wallpaper" feature. This setting controls whether or not Portal changes your desktop image when starting playback, with it turned off motion visuals will continue to play on the desktop but with the following limitations:

(a) The macOS menu bar will not take on the colour of the current portal you are playing,
(b) Portal backgrounds will not show in Mission Control or on the Lock Screen, and
(c) Window tinting will not take on the shading of the current Portal scene.

Personally, for me, (1), (2) & (3) are very minor limitations. So if the macOS Sonoma bug is really getting in the way of you using Portal and the benefits it can bring to your day, then I would 110% recommend switching off the "Sync Wallpaper" feature.

👋 Hi Authentic_augie,

We'd absolutely love to bring Portal to Apple TV and the even larger, higher resolution displays. I've no doubt it'd be a stunning experience.

The good news is our newly released Mac app is a step in that direction, helping us lay some important groundwork towards making that happen. Not only have we totally redesigned Portal's UI to suit both macOS and tvOS (less touch-oriented than the iPhone & iPad), but we've also put in place all the back of house infrastructure to support streaming that is a necessity now that we can use up to 8K motion visuals on larger, high resolution displays (downloads just wouldn't be feasible as the files would be far too large). What's more, we've transitioned to SwiftUI to set us up for better cross-platform support, including Apple TV and Vision Pro...

In short, we're well placed to take things forward on the Apple TV front. We still got a few surprises up our sleeve to take the Mac experience up a notch or two, so I'm afraid we don't currently have a date for when Apple TV will land, especially if we also push forward on the Vision Pro journey too.
