Two armies collide in a terrifying roar. Clouds of arrows block out the sun. Yeah, Onmyoji Arena is pretty epic.
Onmyoji Arena is a MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) pitting highly skilled heroes against a battlefield of enemies. To win, you and your fellow soldiers have to destroy the enemy’s base.
Getting there won’t be easy. Nine powerful defensive turrets slow your charge with flaming arrows, while waves of enemy swordsmen dutifully line up to take you down. You have your own base to defend too. Lose track of that and you might as well lay down your weapon.
The map provides its own challenges. You’ll have to cross a river and survive its surrounding jungle. Confrontations with powerful beasts, such as the squidlike Kraken, are essentially mid-game boss fights. Defeat one to wield it as a weapon against your enemy (giant squid tentacle, meet enemy face).
Despite the chaos, Onmyoji Arena is a breeze to control. A handy auto-aim feature lets you quickly lock on to suggested targets (though you can also turn it off). Helpful alerts keep you well informed and gently direct you around the battlefield.
Onmyoji Arena’s sublime delivery seals the deal. The game feels alive, as your various soldiers and sidekicks react in fear or joy to what’s happening in the fight. Brilliant cut-scenes set up each match with sword fights pulled straight from an anime film.
But unlike a movie, Onmyoji Arena puts you in control of the action. Will you lead your army to victory, or find yourself on the wrong end of a squid’s tentacle?
