League of Legends: Wild Rift

Competitive 5v5 MOBA Action

View

Given its incredible strategic depth, making a start with action strategy game League of Legends: Wild Rift can feel intimidating. While its tutorials do an amazing job of explaining the core gameplay and the goals of the game, picking the right champion is where the magic lies.

Each of the game’s areas – Baron Lane, Mid Lane, Dragon Lane and Jungle – gets filled by specific roles. Read on to find out which champion type goes where and who’s a great choice to start your new adventure with.

Baron Lane

Where is it? On the upper or lower side of the map, depending on map rotation – identify it by its closeness to the Baron pit in the Jungle.
Who goes there? One champion from the Fighter or Tank category.

Ouch, that hurts. Garen’s Judgment makes the enemy’s life much harder – and their health shrink continuously.

Your beginner champion: Go with Garen. The tank fighter runs right into the action and deals lots of physical damage up close. Typically, you’ll silence enemies with Decisive Strike whenever you can, then deal continuous damage with Judgment.

In the LoL community, this skill is cheekily called “Spin to win”, so you know what you’re in for. And if the enemy tries to get away after all of that, you can finish them off with a timely use of Garen’s ultimate skill.

Mid Lane

Where is it? It runs from one Nexus to the other one through the middle of the map.
Who goes there? One champion from the Mage or Assassin category.

On the Mid lane, Lux is vulnerable to attacks from many sides. Prismatic Barrier gives her a much-needed shield when things get tough.

Your beginner champion: You’ll like Lux. She’s a powerful mage with skills that keep her safe. Give yourself a shield with Prismatic Barrier, hold up enemies with Light Binding or run away while they’re slowed down by your Lucent Singularity.

If you combine all of these skills, Lux will deal massive damage, too. Her finest moment is when she releases her ultimate skill: a rainbow-coloured, long-range attack to obliterate fleeing enemies, or really, anyone that comes too close.

Dragon Lane

Where is it? On the upper or lower side of the map, depending on map rotation – identify it by its closeness to the Dragon pit in the Jungle.
Who goes there? Two champions, one from the Marksmen (also called AD Carries or ADC) category, and one from the Support category.

As a ranger, Ashe stays away from her enemies. Her Volley ability helps her poke the enemy from afar and clear minions faster.

Your beginner champions: For an ADC, Ashe is a perfect start, as her skills greatly support her actions on the field. Your main focus is to hit your enemies with auto attacks, then buy items that either give you more attack speed or damage.

To keep you safe, especially when you’re out alone, use the occasional Hawkshot to gain vision on the shadowy parts of the map to spot enemies. And if someone’s running off, take them out with your ultimate skill, a massive frost arrow.

No team is complete without good support. As Sona, a perfectly timed heal can make all the difference when facing one, two or more enemies.

Sona is a smart Support pick. Early on, you’ll focus on protecting your ADC, so that they can safely kill minions and build up strength. Later, you help tip team fights in your favour by using your skills to create an advantage.

That means changing your aura – to boost other team members’ damage, to heal yourself and them, or to speed both of you up when you need to escape a dangerous situation. In big fights, you can stun an entire enemy team with your ultimate skill.

Jungle

Where is it? Spread all over the map and divided into two territories by a river that runs along the Dragon and Baron pits.
Who goes there? One champion that’s a good fit for the jungle role. Given its versatility, the pick depends on your style and the team composition. From Tanks, Assassins and even Marksmen, a lot is possible.

When mummy Amumu tosses its bandages to pull itself into a fight, the enemy is stunned and can’t move – a great initiative for the rest of the team to overwhelm them.

Your beginner champion: As a tank that deals consistent damage, Amumu will roam the jungle to smash small and medium-sized monsters to level up. When you’re powerful, you show up on your mates’ lanes to surprise enemy champions and help your team get the upper hand.

Use Bandage Toss to get close and stun the enemy, or to invade their jungle and steal their camps. With your ultimate skill, you’ll later decide big team fights by jumping into the fray to render every enemy unable to move or attack for a moment. Ouch!
