The name of this bombastic game, Man vs. Missiles: Combat, may not be strictly accurate. It’s not so much “man” as it is “plane”. But there is plenty of combat!
By steering with one thumb, and pressing buttons for different attacks, you control a cute but deadly plane, soaring through the sky and taking on enemies.
There’s a knack to aiming your guns and dodging out of the way of enemy jets that come speeding at you. And even more, there’s a knack to knowing when to fight and when to flee, or when to aim for a cheeky power-up. These are scattered across the clouds, and can give you bonuses such as extra speed, shields or attacks.
It’s also important to collect the coins scattered about, which can also be won by competing in online tournaments. You can use these to upgrade your plane’s abilities or purchase better aircraft, which is crucial to maintaining the edge in aerial combat.
When all these systems combine, Man vs. Missiles offers surprisingly delightful depth, and can be quite a challenge – perhaps even harder than flying a real plane, at times?
