Every morning and evening, it’s on. A fight between good and evil. Right versus wrong. Bugs versus slugs.
And Best Fiends is the battleground – where commuter tedium is sucked away into a world of Freddie Mercury-loving centipedes and houseflies so nervous they wear crash helmets.
So welcome, reader, to Minutia. There’s a war going on between your band of cute critters and an army of slugs, who turned nasty when a meteor smashed into Mount Boom, their home.
You and your bugs do battle through linking icons on a puzzle grid – of the kind you’ll have seen before. But this isn’t a match three game like Candy Crush – it’s a ‘linker’, so you slide your finger up, down and diagonally across the grid to connect as many icons of the same colour as possible.
Each successful link is effectively an attack, which clears icons from the grid and also keeps eating away at the dastardly slugs’ health bar.
And as you progress through the levels, there are a myriad of other conditions to meet to pass each stage – like linking a particular number of certain icons, or smashing open crates by linking tiles next to each of these boxy blockers.
It never feels samey. There are a ton of different types of challenges to overcome and there’s always a timed event happening that adds extra bonuses for completing stages.
We sailed past level 150 recently, but the battle of Minutia certainly shows no sign of stopping (and nor do we want it to, frankly). With new updates and content drops happening all the time, it feels like Best Fiends is just getting better and better. As commuter games go, it’s pretty much essential.
