Busuu: Language Learning 12+

Upd. Oct 2024 the recents updates make it much pleasant to use! I love how lisssons structured and I love that they’ve added more to Spanish B1. The only tiny thing is it ignores typos. But overall experience is much better now.

I have premium account. I learn Spanish from English I use both duolingo and busuu. Paid both. I love how grammar material is structured in busuu But there are few really annoying and frustrating issues: 1. grammar review NEVER loads! Loader spins and spins and that’s it 2. On b1 all explanations out of the sudden started to be in Spanish and I’m not as good and it’s impossible to know sometimes what some word means. Often sentence examples don’t have translations. In duolingo you can click on every word to see what it means. 3. Typos are ignored. Answer counted as incorrect even if there is a smallest typo and phone keyboard can be tricky.

Recently I started learning German and was about to try this app, but unfortunately couldn't. It turned out that I had an account, created years ago and never used. When I logged in the app it didn't allow me to choose what language I want to learn and showed me that English is selected and that there's no means of selecting another language and that I need to pass a placement test to figure my current English level. I passed and the app said that my level is C1 and that they don't have any lessons for this level. Then I tried selecting German, hoping to try and pass a couple of beginner's level lessons, but the app said that it's not gonna happen and I need to pay beforehand. I actually don't mind paying, but I want to know want I'm paying for. In gaming it's called a Freemium model, when before making a purchase a gamer has one or a couple of levels to play with. I know that, because I took part in release process of such games. So, I'm a bit disappointed, since the app has a lot of good reviews and I don't have a chance to try it.
My recommendation for developers is to add at least 2-3 free levels for each available language and lock all other levels until a customer makes a purchase.

Overall, the grammar section and tests in the app are good, but the practice part is broken; it doesn’t work as described and doesn’t aid learning effectively. Additionally, the app fails to save your practice results after some point, repeatedly offering the same grammar topics no matter how many times you complete the quizzes. I tried the same topics 10 times in a row with no variation. For word practice, it functions but is significantly worse than other apps. It doesn’t track which words you need to review; all words appear in random order, and the same word can be repeated three times in a row even if you get it right, unlike other apps that strategically space out repetitions. It’s disappointing that such a promising app lacks a relatively simple algorithm for memory training. I recommend using another app to practice words and take grammar quizzes. Maybe at some point, they’ll fix the issues, and it could be a strong 4-5 star app, but in its current half-broken state, I can’t recommend it.
