Magic Tower 3D is a classic dungeon RPG made with a modern 3D blocky style visual presentation. The game is a hybrid of dungeon RPG and strategy/puzzle game. As the player, you have to figure out when would be best time to fight with a certain enemy, pick up an artifact or open one of the magic doors.

Despite the simple design of the fighting system, the game is still addictive and extremely fun to play.

Dead end after an hour of playing

So I played for an hour and apparently I wasn’t enough of a psychic to guess which parameters I need to upgrade first because I didn’t know which enemies I was about to encounter. And now I’m surrounded by enemies that I cannot touch or that kill me in three blows, with no money or experience left to spend on upgrades. The Elf lady says that if I hit a dead end I need to start over. Brilliant.

I’d consider this game a puzzle of sorts if not for few factors.

First, everything takes ridiculously long. Reaching the shop or the Master to upgrade stats is a huge chore. Floors are laid out to take as much of your time as humanly possible. By the time you get where you were going you forget why you wanted to get there.

Second, the dead-end state of a puzzle can be magically solved by paying real money to progress. At this point it’s not a puzzle anymore, but a money grabbing trap.

Pity. Looked like it had potential.
