現代澳門日報於一九八七年三月由社長林和義先生創刊成立,最初為中英文週報,每週出刊一次。並於一九九一年向新聞局申請正式轉為日報,天天出版。
林和義先生為港澳資深前線記者,為致力於社會民眾,當年毅然成立現代澳門日報,全力為澳門市民服務,一向以搶先、不偏不倚、以最正面方式報導。現代澳門日報版面設有:澳門新聞,國際新聞及體育文娛、狗馬消息財經等。
現任社長為林潤松,於二零零八年正式上任,亦將秉承本報的一貫忠旨,為本澳市民報導最新、最真的新聞消息。
本報於澳門各大報攤港澳來往客輪均發售。
根據澳門大學在二零零二年對本澳報章調查顯示,現代澳門日報在巿民「閱讀報紙選擇」及「購買報紙選擇」兩項調查中均排在第四位。
