本校創於一九四六年，一九六九年成為教育署資助之全日制初中學，一九九三年轉制為本港第一間實用中學，並修訂課程，增設多項與職能有關之實用科目。配合教育署實用中學主流化政策，本校二零零一年開始，逐步主流化，但保留既有特色，包括海軍傳統 (如步操）及寄宿服務，並開辦中四及中五課程。隨著新高中學制發展，學校將於2011/12年度擴展至高中三。
