This app makes me smile

I never write reviews, but this app just makes me happy. I love to travel, and during all the lockdowns of the past couple of years, this app has served as a small proxy for the absence of travel in my life. It's a glimpse into amazing places that I'd love to visit. I love that the photos shuffle and surprise me, and it's really interesting to see the same location at different times of day and night. So many beautiful places on this big blue spaceship we call home. Would love to see more photos added to keep things fresh. Some folks mentioned photo quality and subpar gear. Meh. I use a 13" MacBook Pro, and they seem fine on that Retina screen. My two external monitors are old Apple LED Cinema Displays: they stlil work great, but they're much lower resolution than Retina, so that probably makes a big difference. Works for me.Thanks for sharing your artwork and brightening my day(s)!
Just right for Dynamic Desktop

I got to know 24 Hour Wallpaper through their free give-away NYC Dynamic Wallpaper. It worked perfectly and I really liked it. Next I read their app can use the macOS Dynamic Desktop engine, which took my interest as I prefer to refrain from installing perstistent third party tools running in the background. I ended up buying their app because I feel the developer did the right thing when Apple released Dynamic Desktop: they sought publicity by giving away free pictures (something Apple didn't do) and they changed their app so people could use the Apple engine as well as theirs. Fantastic! Hope to see plenty new pictures in the future!
Software is great. Pictures are... meh.

The title says most of what I want to say, but to elaborate - yes, I think the software is well-implemented, and it's nice to have the option to use the system's dynamic desktop engine (I fail to see how this uses more system resources than the app though). But the quality of the photos, in terms of what they chose to photograph, how they framed it, and the quality of the equipment they used, results some hit and a lot of miss to me. Put another way, the pictures don't "pop" from the screen like most of the static wallpapers I usually end up using. I have a 5K display, and in most pictures there is very noticeable edge softness (though the center is sharp - i.e. spherical aberration). More than most pictures. This probably wouldn't be as noticeable on a non-retina screen. Anyway, I couldn't find any pictures that worked for me, so I don't use the app. My rating would go up if they had more quality material.
Lazy photography; only 11 options for nature
jaxx612
As other reviewers have stated, the majority of the backgrounds are titled "[Place] Mix" which means it's different photos of completely different vistas, for the various times of day - I can accomplish this myself if I make a photo album of places in time sequence order then set a slideshow background, so that's not worth paying for and there's really nothing "smart" about it. The majority of the backgrounds are also urban, or even if nature is the foreground then there's still urban buildings/lights in the background (why woud you go to a "California beach" and take a picture facing away from the water???) In total there are only 11 nature scenes without urban buildings or lights, and which are also genuine dynamic wallpapers. Sadly, none of them are the ocean, only 1 is a lake (and the daytime photos are overcast). A huge improvement to this app would be better photography, both in choices of subject matter and higher pixelation (I am looking at the "HD" Yosemite wallpaper and it's equivalent to photos I take on my Google Pixel). Subject matter should be more variable, not just from urban to nature, but close scenes (of a focal point) and landscapes. I don't think $7 is too much to pay for this app, despite my disappointment; I'm sure it still took a significant amount of work for the developers. I'd pay twice that if the photography was better and 3x that if it actually had the variety of scenes advertised and did away with the lazy "mix" backgrounds. Solid effort, but overall a bummer.
Developer Response
Hi, I'm sorry you're not happy with the pictures. Most customers are very happy with their purchase. First, please make sure you've selected the appropriate resolution. All of the wallpapers are 5K, but if you have set the app resolution as HD that's what you will get. You can find this setting in the apps preferences under the Downloads tab. Also please be aware we've been making these wallpapers for 7 years, and over that time camera technology and mastering technology have advanced significantly. We've been working hard all year making new wallpapers for our fall release which are almost entirely nature and fixed view.If you would like us to continue providing you with free wallpaper updates every year, to continue paying to buy and rent the best cameras and lenses, and continue to put our bodies on the line spending 24-48 hours awake in very challenging conditions, please consider revising your review. Negative attitudes like yours only detract from our ability to continue to improve the product. If you would like to discuss further, please send an e-mail to contact@magicwindowapp.com.
