I used Apollo for years and would have happily paid for it. Since it was discontinued, I tried everything else out there, from sideloading options to Narwhal and even the official Reddit app. None of them came close, and the experience was frustrating.Been using Hydra for a few days now, I’m happy to find something that is as good as Apollo was. I got the paid version and this feels like Apollo’s true successor. It even adds features Apollo didn’t have, like simple template-based filters that make browsing much easier. The only thing I’d love to see added is adjustable font sizing. Aside from that, Hydra is nearly perfect and easily the best Reddit experience available now.
So much potential but too many problems to rate it higher than a 2/5

TL;DR the app is slow and sometimes unresponsive (which is not a deal breaker. If that was the only problem it would be a 4/5) but the app also causes my phone to overheat and drain my phones batteryWhen I first downloaded the app I was looking for alternatives to Apollo. Hydra did a really good job as an alternative until I used the app for more than an hour. The app has its share of problems such as long loading times and unresponsive UI elements. These problems are pretty manageable and are not the end of the world. My biggest problem with this app is how I can’t use it for more than 15 minutes without my phone overheating the app becoming slow and unresponsive. Additionally, it would drain my battery rapidly. At first I thought my phone was the problem and tried deleting old apps, turning off background refresh, updating everything I could but nothing would fix it. I deleted and reinstalled the app but overheating and battery drain still happened. I really like the app and would happily give it 5 stars but the overheating issue coupled with the battery drain makes the app almost unusable
God-send of an app!

I needed this app in my life so badly! Reddit app is absolute is infested with ads and privacy intruding trackers. After Apollo was forced to close, I found alternatives to the Reddit app by side-loading but it was never perfect and always buggy and had to re-login every time the app was closed. This is better than even the Apollo app for me. It’s been mostly bug-free but the app was released relatively recently so if you find a bug, just report it and move on. They do fix the bugs! I’ve noticed much less bugs than when the app first released. They’re doing a banger job!
Best option for 2025
Joe2351
Having used too many Reddit clients (Alien Blue, Reddit app, ReddPlanet, Apollo, 2021 Reddit app + tweaks) this is by far the best option for 2025. It could still use a few additional features (content blocking, comment images, startup feed, and others), but development is active so I’m sure it’ll only get better from here. Give it a shot, it’s free anyways
Features:
- Media viewer rewrite
- Hydra in share sheet
- Right side thumbnails in compact mode
- Collapse child comments only
- Filter subreddits temporarily
- Support for new wikis
- Swipe to scrub videos
- Change video playback rate
- Landscape mode
- Media collection navigation arrows
- Post info in media viewer
- Swipe to dismiss media
- Media viewer optimizations
Bugfixes:
- Music no longer randomly pauses while scrolling. I think I fixed this, but I haven't been able to consistently reproduce the bug, so if you experience this, a bug report would be appreciated.
- Posts with a collection of videos only displayed the first video.
- Scrubbing while in gallery mode locks vertical scrolling for a smoother experience.
- Links that are slow to respond to requests for metadata are skipped, resulting in much faster loads in the worst cases.
- Fixed image posts momentarily showing the wrong image.
- Some link sources like Wikipedia would fail to show an image.
- Fixed shadowbanned users being unable to log in.
- Text URLs containing backslashes that weren't marked as links in markdown were parsed incorrectly.
- Posts linking to other Reddit pages (e.g. /r/wowthissubexists) weren't rendering as links.
- Having a multireddit named "All" would cause the "All" button to disappear in the subreddit list.
- Hydra warns you when attempting to reply in a locked or archived post.
