Five Minus One

Excellent mission-oriented WWI game. Very EZ to play. Fun. Viel Spass. I rate it at 4.9 stars.

My only beef with it (which is why I couldn’t give it a full-throttled “5”) is that my plane’s water reflection is not dark enough so I can’t tell how near I am to the water, which is especially frustrating on campaign mission #14, Das Boot. C’mon, developers, a little more contrast, please?!

Very Realistic!

I don't usually write app reviews but the creators of this app put so much time into the story of this game! They must have had to do a lot of research to accurately depict the events you go through during the missions. Very well done story in my opinion.

An addictive arcade-style WWI fighter plane game

If you like blowing things up from a slow moving airborne platform, consider a Sopwith Camel. It’s one of many classic bi- and tri-planes available in this well-engineered game.

And that’s the operative word. It’s a game, definitely not a sim. But be aware, it’s a game for smart people. As in, there’s a compelling and well written (no typos or grammatical errors, even!) narrative that charts your fortunes as part of a Canadian fighter squadron stationed at various real locations during the penultimate year of World War One. (Okay, it’s an RAF squadron but manned by Canadians.) The start of each mission provides the historical context that makes engaging with the enemy all the more compelling.

And there are other seductive elements. The graphics, as displayed at High Quality level on my recent iPad, are clear and uncluttered. Flying my Sopwith, I had the sensation of being suspended in space. That's impressive, and it makes the experience immersive.

Maneuvering is accomplished via the iPad's accelerometers and it works well enough for dogfighting. The learning curve is nearly zero. The enemy fighters are skilled enough to nail you if you do something stupid, but they’re not so good as to make you want to give up. If you fail a mission you get to try it again at no cost to your standing or resources.

The best thing about this game is its playability. Plane setup, for example, is comprehensive. You can improve your plane's performance and lethality by applying points you gain in mission victories (slow but free), or you can bribe your way to upgrades a few bucks at a time.

I have a policy not to invest more in enhancements than I’d pay retail for a game, but the options are so alluring, and the storyline so compelling, that I don’t even want to say how many five-spots I invested in this thing today. It pays off, though. I’m flying the top Allied plane and my machine guns are deadly accurate. (But I can still get creamed of I’m not 100 percent focused.) Without any more dollars going into the developer's pocket, I’m set for many more hours of guilty fun (because there are other things I could be doing) as I progress to the game's conclusion. At which point I’ll be tempted to try it again, this time with a more limited warplane.

There are some bugs and they won’t get fixed because apparently the developer is no longer supporting this game — the current build is two years old. So far I’ve encountered no show stoppers. Here it is, practically dinner time, and I had to be very strict with myself to call it quits.

What the hell — with all the nightmares we have to live with these days, it’s downright therapeutic to lose one's self for a few hours in something that is so much fun.
