Description

NOTE: DO NOT BUY!
ActiveTab was created to fix the tab design in Safari 15.0. Apple has since reverted the tab design and this app is no longer needed.

ActiveTab makes it easier to spot the active tab in Safari on Mac by drawing a line below it. It works by predicting the position of the active tab based on the size of your browser window and the number of tabs.

"The extension [...] undeniably makes it easier to spot the active tab in Safari." - MacStories
"It's worth every penny." - iMore
"ActiveTab simply makes it easier to spot the active tab in Safari." - MacRumors
"It makes the tab instantly recognizable, even when you’re not looking directly at it" - Cult of Mac
"It solves the problem of creating enough visual contrast between active and inactive tabs" - iDownloadBlog

Caveats:
• It only works with the “Separate” tab layout.
• It works best if you hide the Favorite Bar and turn off “Show color in tab bar.”
• It will not work reliably if you have so many tabs in a window that the tab bar becomes scrollable.
• It also won’t work if you change the zoom level of web pages.
• Turn on “Automatically collapse tab titles into icons” so the tab bar won’t become scrollable with less than 10 tabs.

The "can read information from webpages" text in the permission section is just unfortunate wording. ActiveTab needs access to the web page to draw the line below tabs. It's not doing anything creepy!

What’s New

Clever idea; works better without bookmark bar

This is an excellent compromise to address Apple's new tab system. (Please, Apple, there was nothing wrong with the previous tabs!!)

If the bookmark bar is active, however, the Active Tab highlight appears below the bookmark bar, rather than the tab bar. Hopefully a simple bug to fix :-)

Great idea by the developer and I hope that the minor bookmark bar glitch can be addressed. Thank you so much!

Developer Response ,

Thank you! It seems that Apple has moved the Favorite Bar to the top of the tab bar in the latest macOS beta.

Works great with Safari 15.1

Works as advertised ... another life annoyance solved for only $2. I have all my websites zoomed to 115% and the highlighting still tells me which tab is the active one. I also really like the "Improve visibility" option, so for example I can see the blue line on a site with a black background and the black line on a site with a blue background! Wonderful.

Great idea - just needs some more iteration!

Works and very happy to have this as an option, but the alignment seems to be off when used with Safari with Pinned Tabs along with Regular Tabs.

Would also be great if it had some ability to switch display color based on the tab color theme. For example, a dark color works well for light colored tabs, but is much harder to see on a dark colored tab.

Developer Response ,

Enabling "Improve visibility" in the settings should make it easier to see the indicator in both light and dark mode. You can also play around with the custom colors.
