Al‑Anon Family Groups is a mutual support program for people whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking. By sharing common experiences and applying the Al-Anon principles, families and friends of alcoholics can bring positive changes to their individual situations, whether or not the alcoholic admits the existence of a drinking problem or seeks help.

The Al-Anon program is based on the Twelve Steps (adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous), which we try, little by little, one day at a time, to apply to our lives, along with our slogans and the Serenity Prayer. The loving interchange of help among members and daily reading of Al-Anon literature thus make us ready to receive the priceless gift of serenity.

The official mobile app of the Al-Anon Family Groups is designed to provide an easy way for anyone affected by someone else’s drinking to find hope and help, whether they can attend a face-to-face meeting or not.

Features include:
- Al-Anon meetings powered by Zoom with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance enabled. In the app you will see this added security is identified by a green shield inside the meeting. The HIPAA compliance provides the following additional securities:
-- Disallows cloud recordings
-- Forces out of meeting chat encryption on
-- Forces encryption for 3rd party endpoints
-- Disables streaming to any service that only supports RTMP
-- Prevents copying or saving meeting chats

- An opportunity to connect with Al-Anon friends and chat privately with them
- A built-in private journal, which you can use to track your recovery
- A news feed where you can share with your Al-Anon friends what is on your mind; you can also view what’s on your friends’ minds.
- An opportunity to subscribe to a daily dose of Al-Anon members’ experience, strength, and hope.
- An opportunity to easily contribute to the World Service Office.

Long time member... and a UX person here: This=🥴

Lots of critical UX bugs! I recently downloaded and tried this app again after trying it’s 1st release to the world (I teach user experience design as a professor and have been in the field for over 30 years). of the many problems this app still has, by far the worst is that there is no immediate access to help as in a technical help. A FAQ is not a substitute for such and the non-standard UX design force leads to an even greater need for such. Dear developers: Please study Apple’s dev documentation - particularly the UI GUIDELINES. Please appky the standard Heuristics used in designing a user experience. Finally, a reminder - the principle of ‘anonymity’, privacy, and leadership in the AlAnon program depend upon, per the service manual, ‘obedience to the unenforceable’ - I.e., We avoid ‘forcing a solution’ such as shutting off an ability to copy a link or text posted or limiting text to xx characters/words. Such trust is ‘enforced’ by the conscience of members themselves; not by someone or someTHING else. You’ve already disclaimed legal responsibilities so let go of your need to control the choices of others. Best practices in UX design assure the USERS retain ultimate control over their experience; not a paranoid control freak developer.

Quick tutorial

Perhaps instead of a tour of the WSO, you could give us a tour of the features and how things work in the app. There’s a lot of potential but this is so not user-friendly. What’s the “my timeline” for? How can I confirm that the person I’m selecting to be a “friend” is the correct person without any identifiers? Do you search by registered name or screen name? Why do I have to pay $20 to get content when I can open my free ODAT? All of these would be great to know. It seems you’ve been pressured to “get an app out there” before the strategy meeting. It’s a great concept, though. I hope updates make it usable.

Thank you for the feedback. The mobile app is free to use, the $19.99 is for a year's worth of daily sharings, much along the lines of purchasing CAL to help the app to be self-supporting. If you have other suggestions, please email us at afgmobile@al-anon.org.

Has potential

I think this was deployed to market before it really had any true features that would be useful out of the gate. I would like to see a bunch of features that aren’t available now: past international convention speakers, face2face meeting list, a button to submit a new zoom meeting for inclusion on the list, instructions for setting up a zoom meeting that can be included on the list, sponsor info, how long in program, daily gratitude list that can be shared, nightly inventory that can be shared, prayers, daily recovery score (points for step work, program calls, reading, journaling, recovery work with partner, etc.) that can be shared.

There are tons of far more useful recovery apps out there - I hope this one is under development for a long time to catch up.

FloAnn, thank you for your feedback. This is our first attempt at a mobile app, and it is progress not perfection. We will be looking at ways to provide other Al-Anon resources available through the app. New electronic meetings for use in the Al-Anon Family Groups mobile app can register via al-anon.org/mobileapp
