Al‑Anon Family Groups is a mutual support program for people whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking. By sharing common experiences and applying the Al-Anon principles, families and friends of alcoholics can bring positive changes to their individual situations, whether or not the alcoholic admits the existence of a drinking problem or seeks help.
The Al-Anon program is based on the Twelve Steps (adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous), which we try, little by little, one day at a time, to apply to our lives, along with our slogans and the Serenity Prayer. The loving interchange of help among members and daily reading of Al-Anon literature thus make us ready to receive the priceless gift of serenity.
The official mobile app of the Al-Anon Family Groups is designed to provide an easy way for anyone affected by someone else’s drinking to find hope and help, whether they can attend a face-to-face meeting or not.
- Al-Anon meetings powered by Zoom with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance enabled. In the app you will see this added security is identified by a green shield inside the meeting. The HIPAA compliance provides the following additional securities:

-- Prevents copying or saving meeting chats
- An opportunity to connect with Al-Anon friends and chat privately with them
- A built-in private journal, which you can use to track your recovery
- A news feed where you can share with your Al-Anon friends what is on your mind; you can also view what’s on your friends’ minds.
- An opportunity to subscribe to a daily dose of Al-Anon members’ experience, strength, and hope.
- An opportunity to easily contribute to the World Service Office.
- Annual Subscription $19.99/yr -Auto-Renewing
-- Premium content is available through an annual subscription which is associated to your Apple ID and is automatically renewed unless canceled. Long time member... and a UX person here: This=🥴
Applause to AlAnon for at least trying fo create an app but this just was deployed too soon and without sufficient initial ALLHA testing. Besides the obvious technical issues, other design and conceptual issues stray from AlAnon’s own traditions and concepts.
I am sure someone did some impressive mental mechanics to justify this $20 monthly subscription fee re AFG’s 7th tradition and AlAnon itself including its in person meetings is outside the scope of HIPPAA law. It is not a healthcare provider and the design decisions re features turned off or on of the product Zoom, which apparently is integrated here, definitely did not employ someone with either a UX background or a good understanding of all of AlAnon’s legacies. Greqt example, though, of how a software designer can build their own paranoia and fear into a product design.
Dear AlAnon, there are members with the skill set demanded by stuff like this. Turn to the fellowship first - get a consultant even to help vet designers and developers who can design stuff that truly aligns with your principles and serves the fellowship. This is both embarrassing and disappointing.

Thank you for the feedback. The mobile app is free to use, the $19.99 is for a year's worth of daily sharings, much along the lines of purchasing CAL to help the app to be self-supporting. The meetings are powered by Zoom with the upgraded HIPPAA compliant security. If you have other suggestions, please email us at email@example.com.
Perhaps instead of a tour of the WSO, you could give us a tour of the features and how things work in the app. There’s a lot of potential but this is so not user-friendly. What’s the “my timeline” for? How can I confirm that the person I’m selecting to be a “friend” is the correct person without any identifiers? Do you search by registered name or screen name? Why do I have to pay $20 to get content when I can open my free ODAT? All of these would be great to know. It seems you’ve been pressured to “get an app out there” before the strategy meeting. It’s a great concept, though. I hope updates make it usable.

I think this was deployed to market before it really had any true features that would be useful out of the gate. I would like to see a bunch of features that aren’t available now: past international convention speakers, face2face meeting list, a button to submit a new zoom meeting for inclusion on the list, instructions for setting up a zoom meeting that can be included on the list, sponsor info, how long in program, daily gratitude list that can be shared, nightly inventory that can be shared, prayers, daily recovery score (points for step work, program calls, reading, journaling, recovery work with partner, etc.) that can be shared.
There are tons of far more useful recovery apps out there - I hope this one is under development for a long time to catch up.

FloAnn, thank you for your feedback. This is our first attempt at a mobile app, and it is progress not perfection. We will be looking at ways to provide other Al-Anon resources available through the app. New electronic meetings for use in the Al-Anon Family Groups mobile app can register via al-anon.org/mobileapp
