Description

Perfect your ability to hear and say the differences between Aids and Age, Collect and Correct and other confusing sounds.

Learn the American English consonant and vowel sounds that typically trouble Chinese speakers, such as "n" as in "invent" or "sell" vs. "sale." First, learn how to position your mouth. Next, listen to different native speakers and repeat after them. Then play games where you must sharpen your American English sound discrimination skills to determine which sound was said. Did you hear rip or rib? fool or full? ladder or lather? Were the two words you heard the same or different? Of the three words you heard, which one was different? What words do you overhear at a loud party?

Once you learn to hear the difference between similar sounds that don't exist in Chinese, you will begin to produce the sounds correctly. Finally, hear the sounds in sentences and repeat them with the proper rhythm and intonation.

This free App has complete functionality for select sounds. In-app purchase is available for extra sounds that Chinese speakers need to practice. Please rate and review to help us keep what works and improve the rest.

Sound issue with new iPhone

Pls update app pronunciation design for new version iPhone, like 12/13/etc. The app runs smoothly except NO sound for “listen and repeat” and “phrases”.

Great Teaching Tool

I'm an accent reduction coach. When I get a new Chinese client, the first thing I do is have him/her purchase this App to work on sound discrimination skills. This saves the client time and money. Instead of having the teacher read them minimal pairs to test them, students can test themselves at home with this App. They can repeat questions they got wrong until they develop a fine-tuned ear for American English sounds. Then we can spend more time during our lessons on how to produce the sounds. Some of my students listen to this while taking a walk in the evening or sitting on a communter train. I ask them to practice for at least a couple minutes here and there, whenever they can fit it in. The more often, the better. They're learning to carefully listen for sounds that they never heard or paid attention to as a child.
