Description

Perfect your ability to hear and say the differences between Aids and Age, Collect and Correct and other confusing sounds.

Learn the American English consonant and vowel sounds that typically trouble German speakers. First, learn how to position your mouth. Next, listen to different native speakers and repeat after them. Then play games where you must sharpen your American English sound discrimination skills to determine which sound was said. Did you hear rip or rib? fool or full? ladder or lather? Were the two words you heard the same or different? Of the three words you heard, which one was different? What words do you overhear at a loud party?

Once you learn to hear the difference between similar sounds that don't exist in German, you will begin to produce the sounds correctly. Finally, hear the sounds in sentences and repeat them with the proper rhythm and intonation.

This free App has complete functionality for select sounds. In-app purchase is available for extra sounds that German speakers need to practice. Please rate and review to help us keep what works and improve the rest.

Easy to use, but lacking in effective pedagogical content

Regardless which version of American English Pronunciation you download, the most they offer is some listen and repeat of random words and phrases and some traditional listening discrimination drills with items in random order. With no explicit focus on the sound being contrast for the target sound and no attention to the sound’s environment (the place in the word or the following sound), these apps are not as pedagogically effective as they could be. The graphic user interface is quite easy to use and fairly well designed, but the pedagogical content does not make these effective for a basic introduction to these sounds. For the full review see the blog “Today’s English in the World.”

Native English speaker

As a native English speaker in the US, I can say that these sounds are spot on. Very helpful app for my German friends.
