Still form over function

This is the opposite of the old Amtrak app. That one was simple, quick, always working, if maybe not much to look at. The new app is much prettier - and yet, a year(?) into its deployment, still a work in progress. Core features like *completing a card payment* work, or don’t. Depends on the day. I find the process hangs irretrievably, mid-payment, about 1/4 of the time. On the initial rollout, it was nonfunctional for a week. Core other features like, say, changing a reservation... those come and go. Today, “Modify Reservation” is not an option in the “Trip Tools” menu you go to to modify a reservation. Tomorrow, perhaps it will be.

In all, a good-looking app for a wonderful train service, undone by inattention to detail long after it should have been completely debugged.

Solid app with an annoying bug

Overall I like the Amtrak app. I find it convenient to book travel, access and store my digital pass, and check trip status updates for the sadly inevitable delay alerts and information.

One bug that I find super annoying:
View a current/future trip where the origin and destination are in different time zones (e.g., Wolverine 355 Ann Arbor -Chicago). Tap ‘trip tools’. Choose ‘add to calendar’. The event added to your calendar puts ALL of the times in the time zone of your arrival (destination) station. This means that the calendar event’s departure time is always incorrect. For my trip from Arb -> Chi the trip is scheduled to depart Arb at 7:06 Eastern and arrive in Chi at 10:50 Central but the event in my calendar lists 7:06 Central to 10:40 Central. So the event start time is an hour off.

Its like they dont want you to use the app

I travel a lot, have 6 airlines apps I use monthly if not weekly. I use the Amtrak app weekly. I can honestly say it is the WORST app I've ever seen a company use. Its almost like they dont want you to use it. Its the most user unfriendly and inconvenient app I’ve ever seen a company put out.

Pros: Not many, aside from sending the ticket to the apple wallet and ease of canceling a reservation.

Cons: STORE A CARD DATA TO A USERS PROFILE! Most people book trains on the go, on the way to the station, if not the platform. Having to dig into your bag or wallet to input your credit card info is such a pain. Ive missed trains last minute waiting for the ticket yo go through.

Con- For a company that wont store data they certainly have enough banking security. The Visa Verification block will trigger 8-10 times causing you to have to call the bank to verify the charge. You will miss a train because of this if you book last minute. Yes, this may be a Visa issue and not Amtrak, but I book all my airlines weekly with the same exact card and I’ve never had that trigger before. So either Visa doesn’t trust Amtrak or they have a very strict agreement with visa.

Its 2019, store a card in a users profile and make your app a tiny bit convenient. And then they wonder why no one takes the train anymore.....
