Game A, History C

The game can be fun, and fast-playing. There are a wide variety of scenarios, presenting different challenges such as set-piece battles, ambushes, and attacks on convoys, but there doesn’t seem to be a scenario editor to make home-brew scenarios and to use our own research into the sizes and structures of the opposing armies. There are no provisions for command and communication problems. Players can individually control each unit, which gives too much control, and can require too much coordination for clumsy players. There are no provisions for dismounting cavalry, either.

Only lasts for so long

A great game but you run thru the scenarios rather quickly as least on those where you play the side opposing the Romans, Those are the easiest to win ( at least on Standard difficulty using the historical AI). The Roman side is far more difficult to win with and I would say in some countries it is impossible to advance past the first two or three encounters as the Roman player. Perhaps the design was made to keep you interested as there are some nuances to playing either but this wears off after awhile and just leads to serial frustration. So yeah if you have $10 to spare you can get many hours of playing time out of this game but in the end the design flaws make it a frustration experience.

Very good, needs a little more depth

As a former miniature wargamer, I find this game to be very enjoyable. It looks like a port of an Alexander war game form the 90’s. Hannibal and Ceaser games also look like re-boots of this older series. These are like elaborate chess battles set with historical fightling units and based loosely on actual battles. Great game if you’re a fan of turn based strategy and ancient warfare.
