The AP World Languages Exam App (AP WLEA) is a free app developed by College Board and ETS for AP students to take their 2020 AP Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish Language and Culture online exams. The app includes audio instructions and prompts to guide students through the exam and records their responses. Recorded responses will automatically upload for scoring. AP WLEA also has a practice mode for practice prior to exam day.

NOTE: The AP WLEA is new for the 2020 AP online exam. It is the ONLY recording option that can be used to record world language audio responses in 2020. Previous recording options such as handheld digital recorders, computers with recording software, digital language labs, or the DAC app may not be used.

The app doesn’t launch on the iPad.

So a lot of complaints are about the test itself. While yes I was frustrated with the test my actual complaint is with the app. I had four AP tests this year. All of these tests worked well on the iPad. Except of course for the last test, French. I had logged on thirty minutes early on the dot. The app told me to access exam mode by launching it through the website however I did not understand what they meant by that until it was too late. When accessing the test on the website I originally went through the demo and was left on a screen telling me to launch the app. But there was no button to do so. Naturally I assumed that I then could access the exam mode on the app through the app. Once that failed I returned to the website. This time the website gave me the demo to my English exam which I had completed earlier. A third time it had brought me back to the same page with no button. At this point I assumed that a button would show up on the website launching the app into exam mode once the test officially starts (9:00 for me). 9:00 rolls around and there is still no button. This prompts me to panic. After launching it on my phone (thank god I had the app on my phone) I finally see the button. It launches exam mode on the app only to have it tell me I missed the window to take the exam. Best yet is that under all the reasons for retaking the test this one is not labeled. Thanks for the stress.

Glitchy App and a Hack of a Company

I’m really glad that I spent $100 for a 15 minute test that only determines whether I can speak a language; there was absolutely no written, listening, or reading section of the exam, three subjects which I have spent an entire year practicing. Thinking you can determine fluency in a language based on 5 “interview” questions and a random presentation topic that has absolutely nothing to do with the topics we’ve studied this entire year is insane. Also, the app glitched out my AirPods while taking the actual exam. As you can imagine the audio switching back and forth from my headphones to phone speaker during a test which basically determines whether my whole year of Spanish was a waste of time was really stressful. I’ve never had this happen in any other app, and I really can’t see why it should be a problem. While I applaud College Board for taking their time to formulate online exams, it’s ridiculous that we still had to pay the full amount for a test that is about a third of the time it would usually take. Sure we could’ve decided not to take the test and get refunded, but that just means wasting all of our hard work and dedication in a really tough class, essentially making it unavoidable, just like the SAT. Great job CB, you really got this whole scam thing figured out! Hope you’re enjoying your $900,000 salary David 😌

I’m very frustrated

I was prepared for the exam and I felt so good about my recordings. After listening back to my recording, I was about to hit the continue button, but it took me to a white screen saying that it was “processing”. It kept processing and then I was taken to a page saying that it “failed to upload the recording”. I felt so confident about the test and was sure that I would have gotten a 4 or 5, but OF COURSE THE TEST DIDN’T WORK! And of course, all that is available is a makeup test. I submitted the makeup request only to be told that I have to wait to see if the makeup request went through successfully...IN A WEEK. Now I have to wait to see if they even let me take the makeup, which is in 2 weeks. Instead of getting to relax after tomorrow, which was supposed to be my last exam, now I have to take an exam in June. I am beyond frustrated with the app. At least with the other tests now, there is the email where you can send your responses. But there’s no backup for the language exams. What if the makeup exam doesn’t work. Then all my effort in the class the entire year would be for nothing. CollegeBoard needs to fix the problem with uploading before the makeup exam. I didn’t pay $96 dollars to take an exam that doesn’t work. I will be EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY MAD if the makeup exam has glitches.
