Joe Rowe - Park Academy:
"Anyone with dyslexia or dysgraphia should strongly consider this tool, because for us this is priceless. We've had no regrets. Our parents often buy this for their home iPad after witnessing the results at school."
High quality synthetic voices ensure a great user experience. All menus and buttons can be read aloud, and different reading strategies cover many of the typical use cases.
Choose between different reading strategies:
• Read from cursor position
• Read selection of text
• Read sentence by sentence
• Read words as you type
Stunning visual tools even highlight the text as it is being read aloud.
The integrated PDF-reader will allow you to open any OCR-processed PDF-file in AppWriter and have it read aloud with color highlighting.
AppWriter contains a word prediction feature. Word prediction enables you to develop your writing skills by providing the tools to construct sentences with ease. Context based word suggestions will allow you to produce high quality work and reduce the time it takes to do so.
AppWriter predicts the word you want to use next. This means that you will be less likely to make grammatical or spelling errors.
Word prediction is available with the ability to hear each word before selection.
The Dyslexie font is another great feature in AppWriter. The specific characteristics of the Dyslexie font make it easier for people with dyslexia to distinguish the individual letters. This reduces the number of reading errors as well as the effort it takes to read the text.
AppWriter comes with American English. Users may install max 2 additional languages for free, and they can choose between:
- American Spanish
- Australian English
- British English
- Canadian French
We introduce a unique profile.
- If you create a new profile in AppWriter, you get access to your own user dictionary, read aloud features and phonetic spelling.
- An active internet connection is required to create a profilel
- When you are online, your profile will automatically sync to AppWriter Cloud.
- Your Profile is always accessible from any iPad with AppWriter installed. As long as you have internet connection, you can log out of AppWriter on one iPad and log in to AppWriter on another iPad, and your profile will then automatically synchronize your dictionary and your phonetic spelling to that iPad. If you are not online, changes to your profile will synchronize when you are online again.
How do you manage the created documents? It can be emailed, copied to clipboard for use in another app, send as an iMessage, directly to Twitter or exported to Dropbox or Google Docs.
AppWriter is an all-in-one assistive technology tool. AppWriter is available on many different platforms and devices.

Ratings and Reviews
Got this app because it uses the ivona engine. Most apps on the store use fairly cheap voice engines. Some better ones use cepstral which is decent and neospeech which is more realistic. Ivonas voice engine beats them all. Unfortunately this app does not allow for changes in reading speed and has less fine control of reading. In fact there are almost no controls when reading PDF files. I hope they make improvements, especially given the price.
builds confidence for students with dyslexia
Our school purchased 35 copies of this after buying 2 copies for a test period. With AppWriter students are now writing with confidence in much higher quantity and quality. Anyone with dyslexia or dysgraphia should strongly consider this tool, because for us this is priceless. We've had no regrets. Our parents often buy this for their home iPad after witnessing the results at school. We use google docs for education in tandem with AppWriter's upload/download. It works no matter what iPad they use, no matter the location, no matter their learning differences.
Way overpriced for what it can do
I was really hopeful this app would deliver, but it is just not there yet. It costs more than Pages, and it can't even copy and paste text from a PDF, email message or text document into a blank document created within the app. If all it could do was allow copy and paste and display the text in the Dyslexie font, I'd be happy.
Another problem is that the screen seems to be off by a full line when you try to tap into a specific word. My other apps are way more accurate. Also, using the select tool is quite inaccurate. This may have to do with the extra line spacing that the font has. But it seriously needs to get fixed.
Lastly, the OCR scan was just ok. The text needed a lot of editing. So, the fact that the editing tools are so awkward in this app makes it even more annoying.
Oh! And the read along feature didn't work. The words highlight, but there is no voice.
I want a free upgrade when they work out these bugs!!! Right now, I feel like I was robbed.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
