Collection of Health data such as calories burned and heart rate requires an Apple Watch or other Apple Health connected device.

Arc is only awake and using GPS when you are active and moving. For the rest of the day Arc stays in a low power sleep mode, with GPS turned off, to conserve battery.

On a typical day of two to three hours of travel a single full battery charge should last from morning to evening without requiring extra recharging during the day. However longer trips (for example a long hike or cross country drive) may consume more than expected battery, due to Arc needing to be awake and recording, with GPS activated, for the duration of the trip.

For longer trips, I recommend plugging your phone into a car charger or battery pack, to avoid unpleasant battery surprises.

What’s New

Version 2.3.2

## 2.3.2

Hopefully fixed the crash during launch that is affecting a small number of people.

## 2.3.1

Arc now monitors the thermal state of your phone (ie how hot it is), and dynamically adjusts its processing and recording to suit the thermal conditions.

A note on data gaps and "Arc has been stopped" notifications:

If you are experiencing frequent notifications that Arc has been stopped by iOS, or frequent data gaps, and you own a newer model phone (iPhone 8, X, or newer), please contact Apple support, quoting bug number 45805073.

Apple have yet to acknowledge the iOS 12 bug that is causing increased instability and unreliability for background apps on newer model phones. Perhaps it's time they heard from more of us!

Couldn’t be built by Apple any better

Here’s a privacy-focused location diary tool.. and there’s nothing else like it. All built by a single developer, all on-phone data processing and storage, daily automatic exports, tie-ins to photos and workouts and health.. I wish Moves App died years ago for things like this to come to fruition sooner.

In the future I’d love to see (in order of my own desires): Stationary activities like moves offered, Apple Watch abilities (so you one could leave their phone at home for a run and still see the track), and data editing/importing (as a means to do the same with any device or to split tracks back into separate categories).

I’m proud to be a backer and can’t wait to see what the future looks like for Matt’s projects.

Hi! Thanks for your kind words 😄🙏

I will be adding the ability to import workout routes as Arc timeline items soon. So that will make it possible for Apple Watch recorded workouts to appear directly in the Arc timeline. That one's going to be fun!

There's also more data import features on the todo list, and hopefully coming soon. Import from GPX, and other formats.

Thanks again 😄

Want to Love, Still Miss Moves

While I definitely appreciate the privacy centered approach of Arc compared to Moves, I miss Moves.

I WANT to love Arc. A great deal of effort and love has gone into the app, and it shows. And I have donated around $50 to the developer in the last two years to support their efforts.

That said, its tracking for most of the activities I do is far worse than Moves. It consistently does things like think that I biked 35 miles at 43 mph, or that I walked 8 miles at 17 mph. It consistently mistakes my location for another that I marked once, months or years ago. At my old apartment it consistently thought I was at a bar 3 blocks away. Almost every day at my work it thinks I'm at a food truck 1/4 mile away. It doesn't seem to learn but just keeps making the same mistakes over and over.

That said, it is very good for cycling in the city. That is the one thing it seems to be better at than Moves. But for busing, taking the train, car share, and even walking, it's pretty bad.

Other reviews here say something similar to "not as good as Moves" and the developer seems to respond defensively. I suggest they take such criticism seriously, and with grace, rather than getting defensive.

I'm giving them until version 3.0 to get this app right, and then I'm moving on.

The problems you describe cannot be fixed by Arc 3.0, because the cause of the problems is not in the app but instead in the data on your phone.

Please contact me from the "Feedback & Support" button in the app, so that I can assist you with instructions on how to make corrections to the data on your phone, to solve the problems you're experiencing.

As to comparisons to Moves app, I spent the first three years of Arc development doing daily testing comparisons against Moves app, on a bag full of test devices, under all kinds of conditions, and can say with statistical certainty that Arc is significantly more accurate and reliable than Moves. The problems you are experiencing are specific to the data on your phone, and will be resolved once corrections are applied to that data. So please do contact me from the Feedback & Support button!

As to my defensive response, I respond in such a way because I know factually what the situation is, and am not willing to allow misinformation and mistaken beliefs to go unchallenged in App Store reviews. I do not believe in "the customer is always right". In these kinds of cases I know factually that the customer is mistaken, and it is my role to correct their misconceptions, and also to provide them with free support in understanding how to solve the problems they are experiencing. Which is why I always reiterate that it is best to contact me directly, so that I can provide that support.

Thank you for your understanding. And looking forward to your email!

This app makes me happy.

I like maps and like knowing what I did with my day. Beyond liking, it’s useful for time and mileage tracking. The route recorded is very precise. I can see my path carrying in groceries, parking the car and unparking. The moves interface was much prettier, softer, but there is so much information here that I can get used to the crisper feel. To Mr. Digital Nomad, a question as I can’t find another way to reach you. Did I actually see the map animate itself in reviewing it later? It unfolded like a video. I could see the paths I took unloading the car. Is that normally possible? I know I saw it but don’t know how to make it repeat. And, hey, thanks for this app. I’ve tried all of them I can find and you are the winner, standing tall.
