Easy to set up but
I installed a Nest camera for the front of my house prior to buying two Arlo Pro. My neighbor across the street bought and installed a set of four Arlos and when he told me they were wireless I decided to buy two for my backyard. The Nest cam which I love has to be connected to a power source and that’s a challenge if you don’t have a nearby outlet.
I installed one Arlo on the back patio and one on the side of the house. I was particularly interested in video capturing the animal that was crapping by the side of the house.
Unfortunately, the Arlo has not captured the offending animal that has continued to crap ( i think it’s a possum). It turns out the Arlos don’t capture small animals if its too high up, mine is attached to the eves so it’s out of reach of a prowler. It does capture the gas and electric readers and my gardeners but not the pooping possum. My Nest cam is installed way up on my garage beam and has even captured a small skunk.
Overall I am happy with the Arlo, one feature that’s better than the Nest is the alerts, they come to your phone almost instantly where the Nest has a fairly long delay (about 3 minutes) and the Nest is plugged in!
The Arlo’s video quality is good and the night vision is also good. For me, the ease of installation is a plus. If you want the best and can pay more, are adept at wiring etc, go for the Nest, if you want a good system with no fuss installation go for the Arlo.
Best purchase ever
Wanted to begin sleep training and having 11mo baby in his own room. He has a Montessori style room w twin bed on the floor and a gate in the doorway. This app let me see exactly what he was doing while I did the Ferber method sleep training. This camera reports air quality, temp, humidity. I can set to that my phone, no matter if locked or using any app, is like a monitor and allows me to hear everything in his room countinuously on the speaker. When I sleep I leave the app open on the phone and at any moment in the night I can peek over and see exactly where and how he is sleeping, or if he has gotten out of bed and is sitting by the gate or playing in his play area. I can see and hear everything from absolutely anywhere. And I set up my mother as a user for when she babysits. Best purchase ever. During sleep training it has been invaluable because even though he is crying (which only lasted a couple Kin in first few nights), I can actually watch him and I know that he is okay. Alerts are awesome, alert for crying. Noise, and motion. Can adjust noise level to set off alert as well as amount of motion to set off. Comes in handy for when I don’t want an alert to come in when he turns over sleeping. It alerts if he crawls around his bed or out of his bed due to higher level of movement. Also, if the cat decides to meow outside of his doorway I get alerted before she can wake him to shoo her away!!
Good system. Sometimes devices go offline when updates occur. Been using for two and one half years.
Update after about 2.5 years of use: This app as well as the system, overall, has worked well. Although the cameras and lights sometimes, about every several months, go offline. It appears the devices tend to go offline when updates occur to the app or to the devices. We have an Arlo Go, Arlo cameras, and Alro lights at more than one property. Every several months we run into weird glitches where some devices go offline several times for a duration of a couple weeks and then everything is fine for another several months. This pattern has continued for the past 2.5 years. Overall, the app and the system is very convenient to use. And, we’d recommend Arlo in spite of the occasional glitches that cause devices to go offline. The batteries (non-rechargeable) in the Arlo cameras last us about 5-6 months unless there is heavy usage (a lot of traffic at the camera locations) in which case the batteries seem to last about 2-3 months. The battery (rechargeable) in the Arlo Go seems to last about 6 weeks. For us, it is very important to have a stable system that can be remotely operated reliably. Although there are some temporary glitches every several months which require in-person access to the system, it is very stable and reliable in-between the glitches. And, again, we would definitely recommend buying this system and using this app.
