I should have posted before now. If I had posted earlier, I might have taken a half star off for the need to use a modal transform for layers, but it isn't that hard to adapt, frankly? And I would be adding on the half star anyway, now, because ArtStudio has been on 3 iPads of mine and was essential on each. We have a lot of choices, which I personally like, when it comes to art apps on iPad, but over and over ArtStudio has been the go to app which I use like I use Photoshop on my desktop computer. Photoshop is a must have, and similarly, ArtStudio does the same jobs on my iPad. And it does it in a very familiar and understandable way, if you normally use PS. So even if I get romanced by other apps on my iPad Pro, the images will probably be partially done in ArtStudio, as most images will touch Photoshop at some point when I am working on my Mac. I could list things that I think are great and there are many. But I think it is probably more meaningful to say that I don't think there is anything "wrong" with ArtStudio. Sure, more features, easier to do, I am on board. But ArtStudio is what I go to when I run into a problem doing whatever I want to do elsewhere. And that has been true over 3 well-used iPads. That is a compliment that I don't pass out much. It was the "first installed" art app on iPad #2 and #3. I probably will do so on number 4, if and when that happens. LuckyClan willing. Nice job folks.
I have used this app for all my digital work. I loved the feature where you could share your work to an online gallery. I am an aspiring artist and using this app has been so far a great experience. I bought this for five dollars. Around the summer, the app started crashing. And I don't JUST mean occasionally. It has become more and more frequent, and I'm not the only one with this problem. Whenever I go to save my work, the Autosave takes 3 minutes (should be instantaneous or a few seconds) and if I log out of the app to reload, it will crash and DESTROY my art! The line art will turn into smudged bars or disappear altogether, and the colors will smudge terribly. It happens whenever I have more than 2 layers. And instead of fixing these bugs, Luckyclan INSTEAD creates a new version, this time SEVEN DOLLARS! No way am I paying 7 dollars for another art program when the one I have now should work fine. Fix this, please. I've lost hours and hours of hard work, and I've been devastated about it. I just lost a piece I was working on for someone that had requested it, and I took a screenshot of the gallery and cropped it. It is extremely blurry now. NO ARTIST should have to fear the destruction of their work, especially on such a promising app. Other than the not so recent crashes, I love this app. It has plenty of customizable tools and options. Just fix the crashing. Thanks.
Wow great interface improvement! I saw the app had potential but it was truly awkward to use prior to the latest update. I rarely used it because the color selection was very tedious. I'm still not fond of the brush shapes but regarding the way the tools are set up, this app has gone from 2 stars to five. I think the Procreate art app has the most sophisticated brush creation engine but they don't have a large enough canvas like this app does now. The retina option makes gorgeous images even on the iPad 2. The only lag you will encounter is on very large brushes involving blending (which can happen on a desktop computer as well). I'm a Procreate, Sketchbook Pro, ArtRage, Inspire Pro, Brushes, Colored Pencils and iDraw user. All of these apps are great for different reasons. The improvements to the interface are now similar to Brushes, Procreate, and Sketchbook. This app offers so much more in the way of editing. It is truly beginning to feel like Photoshop for iPad (especially the new menu!!!). The app could use more layers and a better brush creating engine. I'd say it's going to be up in my top three now. Definitely worth every penny. Don't listen to the cheap folks who can't afford to pay the price of a donut for add-ons that you don't even need!! Thumbs up Devs!
I love this app. It’s one of the few I found that has a selection tool and wand like Photoshop and let’s you edit and transform the selection without having to create a new layer. It has masking layers, cloud and render special effects, and I love being able to switch and sample colors just by holding my finger down for a few seconds. It looks like we can create our own custom brushes, too. There are a lot of features I haven’t used yet since I used the free version of the app with its three layers and small canvas size for three years. I felt it was worth buying the upgrade and I don’t regret a penny. :)Now on to the bug report. Since I installed the latest update (January 2019) I’ve been having lagging problems (I bought extra icloud storage so that should not be a problem). The worst bug is the swatch that previews the size and shape of a tool. It has been freezing up even after I make my selection and staying on my screen, hiding my drawing. I’ve had to stop working five times and force close the app to get the previewer to go away, since leaving the app is not enough to unfreeze it. I see you’ve worked on fixing that glitch before, so if you can fix it again, that’d be awesome. :) Thanks!
I'm a semi-professional artist with experience in pastel, watercolor, and oil. There are things I like about each, and things that frustrate me about each. Painting with ArtStudio is like taking the best of each, with none of the disadvantages (although of course, there are still things about each of those media I prefer, not the least of which is having an actual tangible end product). Without having tried Brushes, Sketchbook Pro, or ArtRage (the other apps I considered, and may yet try), I cannot compare, but so far, ArtStudio is exceeding the expectations raised by the reviews that made me choose it first. The thing that impresses me most about painting with ArtStudio is that it resembles traditional media enough that my own "style" immediately came though - my ArtStudio paintings are easily recognizable as being by the same artist as my paintings in other media. And yet, the ArtStudio paintings also retain a collective "look" of their own - not quite the same as any other medium. Again, I'm sure one could say the same other similar apps. But the description of the features and usage of ArtStudio seemed like it would be the best fit for me, and so far it has not disappointed.
This is by far the easiest and best drawing app available today for the iPad (I have 4 other iPad drawing apps now to compare this to). Functioning much like a scaled-down version of the world's most famous photo manipulation program, my favorite features are ability to use multiple layers, the color picker tool, and the ability to offset the drawing area so you can see the exact spot you are applying an affect to instead of guessing where under a blunt finger or stylus the point will be centered. The tools are easy to use, the menus are more user-friendly and intuitive, the interface doesn't get in the way, and the program itself is just more quicker to get around allowing you to output a great art piece much faster than the other iPad drawing apps. I'm also using the app paired with a stylus from RocketFish (less than US$20 at BestBuy--this one had the longest barrel so it would not cause writer's fatigue that happens with the ones that don't extend beyond the length of your thumb when cradled in hand) which also makes a world of difference. What also impresses me is that I can easily create images on par with the ones showcased in the apps screenshot section, which is a first for me!
I've only been using this product for a short while, but I'm definitely putting it to the test. I love to colorize vintage black and white digital photos. To do so requires a versatile paint app that lets me adjust paints, opacity, layers, brushes, zooming, effects, etc. I've been very satisfied with all. You can see what I've managed to do on the net under Miko2660. I would give this product a definite 4.75 rating. I reserve the final .25 because it could be improved with some minor adjustments. For instance, give us a small separate window that shows where the brush point is on small detail. Zooming doesn't help because the image pixilated too much. Also, an addition of metallic colors and hair colors would be nice. That would need a 2 to3 color blend on the brush. OR you could sell special pallets preloaded with metallics or hair colors, etc. Also, if you could hilite or box the color on the pallet that is currently being used. I know we have the old and current colors appearing in preview boxes, but when you're loading a pallet for a special project, it's easy to loose track of where you are on the actual pallet itself. Just a thought.
I've used most the iPad drawing and painting apps, free and paid. Some of them are part of my regular toolset, and others are for occasional use at best. SketchBook Pro had more or less become my go-to app for drawing, and I have been using Procreate for painting -- or trying to. I had seen ArtStudio in my searches for something better before, but always so ething kept me saying "maybe next time" -- stupidity, I reckon. The war on stupidity has been won. I am a devout convert to the one and only tool that I need to do what I want, the way I want it, and with a minimum of retraining from SketchBook Pro. Had I had this nifty tool a week ago, I could've saved a week's worth of work! The inclusion of masks alone is enough to move SketchBook Pro to the garbage bin. But there's also a gradient tool? And filters, and so much more! This is a very wise choice for anyone looking for a general purpose drawing, sketching, or painting app. Or an even wiser choice for someone else looking for an advanced iPad app for handling features typically found only in desktop software. Pick this one up today. Now, even. Yes, literally NOW!
Well it's not perfect, but I have been trying many of the painting apps-brushes, sketchbook pro and others. So far this is the best one. I am an illustration major in school and I use a computer for most of my work. This isn't up to par with photoshop or painter yet...it will never have pressure sensitivity or quick keys, but there are some things that could get even better. One is that I'd like to see even more smudge tool options. Specifically more gitter sliders-roundness gitter, size gitter, etc. This really effects how well blending works. Also I don't seem to be able to rotate round and square selections, but to be fare I may just not have found that yet. Also a pen tool for selections is something I like to use. All in all though this is a much more in depth app than the others I have found. You know what would be cool is an app that is directed at using your computers processor and software, but shows it on your IPad. So kind of like mouse or teleport, but more directed toward just photoshop or painter11 users. You could see it on your iPad but it's happening on your computer.
I have not dabbled in art since my youth and got the idea recently to sketch and draw the world as I see it (inspired by the IPad as a potential medium). I have to say, I am having a ball!!!The program, I have found, to be very intuitive and easy to learn despite the fact that I am a total neophyte with respect to art. The developer has put together a very comprehensive 45 page manual which I have found very useful. This is a serious, professional tool; however, I have been able to create some pretty interesting images one that was even acquired by my wife for use as a logo for her professional ventures (okay, she is my wife and she does love me :D)Just the same, I am well on my way. It does include a very basic set of interactive drawing lessons which have been appreciated. I would like to see, perhaps, an expansion of these tutorials to include things like layering and color theory and such. Similarly, it would be nice if some of you experienced artists out there would put together a series, perhaps as a video podcast to help us neophytes explore this wonderful world that is ART.
