Ratings and Reviews
Useful, could be better
As a student of ASL, this is extremely useful for learning new vocabulary.
I wish it had the ability to annontate definitions. For example, there are two signs for "what". One is an old sign, apparently not in common current use. I wish I could note that on the entry.
I also wish I could add words. The iPhone has a camera, after all. I could add local signs for names of cities, for example.
At the extreme edge of my wish list, I wish signs could be searched by hand shape, palm orientation, position, movement, etc. so that I could look up an unknown sign to find out what it means, instead of only being able to look up a word in order to see its sign.
As it is, it's like a French dictionary that only lists English words with their French translations, but doesn't alphabetize French words with their English translation. Meanwhile, I understand that there are no "phonics" systems to let you know how to spell the word a sign stands for. Literate Deaf people are bilingual.
The best ASL dictionary available
Very clear and easy to use, search words and mark them as favorite, quiz yourself on favorites or other categories. Fingerspelling quiz and more. I have the desktop version and the iPhone version for quick reference on the go.
Want more categories
My biggest complaint is the few categories. I would like: colors, holidays, clothes, basic gestures, etc. If they could even make it so that you could create your own categories and add words to each one that would be great. I also wish that they had a few examples of sentence structure, but it is a dictionary so I can understand only having words and not phrases. Other than that I like the app. It has a lot of words and you can search them so you don’t have to scroll forever. The camera angle is good and you can see her clearly, also like the slow motion feature.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
