Descripción

A simple app to quickly edit your astrophotography before you upload to social media.

It has basic colour editing such as brightness, saturation, temperature and advance tools such as background skyglow removal, wavelet transformation, the usual curve tone adjustment, grainy and walking noise AI removal. Traditionally, astrophotography editing is done on the laptop where powerful tools such as sky extraction and wavelet imaging are available only. This specialized app gives busy and city(heavily light polluted) astronomer an app that initially produces results. And is magical and fun to use.

Use 2 fingers pinch out to enlarge your photo to better control the editing.

See a 40 second quick editing video at https://youtube.com/shorts/11nECmjHdC0

Hope you enjoy doing this just on the phone. Have fun!

If the app happens to crash, please email to me your image file at ustransit74@gmail.com. Alternatively, you can describe when the app crashes and your phone model. I will work on it and provide an app update. Thank you.

Addition:
- Can open Tiff 8 and 16 bits image and save as Tiff file accordingly.
- If device is running out of memory, app will auto adjust image resolution to prevent crashes.
- App is designed for SeeStar/Dwarf image resolution at the time being.

Requirement:
The AI features(Denoise etc) in the app require at least 4GB RAM memory to work else it will crash. If the AI does not work as expected, send my your image so I can add it to the next AI training.

Novedades

Versión 2.20

- AI Noise, AI Star and AI Gradient revamped.
- Fix stars removed in AI Star will not reappear in wavelet tweak.

Crashes

New behavior…this app crashes immediately with my IPad Pro 2017.

Update: the recent new version seems to have ended this problem. Before, I didn’t get as far as opening an image. When I say it crashed immediately, that’s what I meant, before I could do anything.

Respuesta del desarrollador ,

Hi. iPad Pro 2017 has 4G RAM and should work with iPhone size photo. Could you send me your astro image at ustransit74@gmail.com? I will look into the reason it crashes and provide an app update. Update on Sep 20: A new version is upload to Apple for review. Please contact me if it does not solve the crash issue.

First Time use of AstroEdit

Astro Edit is perhaps the simplest tool I have found for doing basic tweaks to astrophotographs. However, there appear to be some significant bugs in this app.

For the record, I attempted to edit an image that has 16 M pixels from a ZWO ASI071MC-Pro camera. AstroEdit is installed on an iPad Pro (11 inch - 4th generation). This image had been partially processed using other tools (GraXpert and SiriL) but needed some additional processing to get the image looking better. It is here where the problems started. I opened the 16-bit/channel TIFF image into Astro Edit which promptly crashed the app, possibly because the file was too large for the app. So, I took the 16-bit/channel image and converted it to an 8-bit/channel TIFF image. That smaller dynamic range image did not crash the app, but there was not sufficient dynamic range to do any significant processing without creating image artifacts. It’s very important to be able to process 16-bit/channel images in order to have a dynamic range large enough to get good results.

This app has real promise for first time astrophotographers. It would be a game changer for people who are using a smart automated telescope for astrophotography like the ZWO Seestar S50.

The app is in fact designed for Seestar image which is less than 2000 pixel x 2000 pixel. Image that is 16M pixel will run out of memory for the device because AstroEdit creates a dozen copies of the same images for the wavelet layers and the three AI processes. A new version of the app is going to be release in a day where large images are automatic reduced to prevent any crashes. An image size of less than 2000 x 2000 tiff 16 file will still continue to work for now. I will explore solutions to work with huge image resolution. Contact me at ustransit74@gmail.com

I liked it before, I love it now

AstroEdit 2.11 is a game-changer for astrophotography editing on iOS. The addition of real machine-learning AI denoise takes this app to a whole new level, producing excellent results with minimal effort. And the refined user interface makes using the app very intuitive. Someone with no astrophotography experience will find they can make their Seestar images pop and turn into something they’re eager to share. Experienced astrophotographers will feel right at home with tools they’re used to using. AstroEdit is a must-have app.
