Editors’ Notes

Astropad Studio transforms our iPad Pro into the ultimate graphics tablet for our Mac, and we’re astonished by its speed and versatility. Lag-free wireless connectivity, customizable Apple Pencil shortcuts, compatibility with all of our design and illustration apps—sometimes we wonder how we got along without it. Now we spend less time leaping technical hurdles and more time creating cool stuff.

A Game Changer for Mac Users.

Still getting up to speed on some of the interface commands, for example, trying to navigate using the “magic” button is confusing, but like so much with these things, eventually a light will go on and I will say, “Duh!” to myself. The pencil works flawlessly (iPad pro 2021 and 2019, as well as Mini iPad 6 a mini M1 Mac, using Rebelle as my graphics program.)I had written in a previous post that I was not sure that the difference between the Studio version ($80 per year) and the Standard version ($30, total) warranted the extra cost. The Studio version is crisper and, of course, offers a few more gadgets, which are nice, but the Standard version is adequate for most things with one big caveat: the screen resolution on the Studio version is much superior and it seems to run quicker. Of course, if you use it for, say 10 years, you are paying $800 for one and $30 for the other —or $0.25 per month…really these subscription models are way, way out of line, frankly, and are going to make me a lot more hesitant about buying software. I would much rather buy the product once and even pay extra for major updates than to be bled forever for the use. Heck, I’m knocking off one star. But I will subscribe, Astropad leech.

Can’t own/buy this app - pay monthly

With so many great painting apps out there that you can actually *buy* it always amazes me how these subscription apps stay in business. This app costs $12 per month, every month. It’s like you’re automatically buying a new app every month. Just do the math, how many subscription apps can you afford? Say you subscribe to 5 apps at $10, that’s $50 per month! If that’s your spending limit that means you can’t buy any more new apps unless you stop subscription to one of the existing apps. But then you lose that app. All the money you paid them - gone! Subscription model for apps just doesn’t work for the consumers. I will only subscribe to services or content providers. But subscribe to a product? Never. Put a price on it. $50, $80, whatever, if it’s worth it we’ll buy it. But the subscription model “hides” the costs making it seem less expensive. Well let me “unhide” it. If you use this app for 5 years you will pay $400. And even then if you stop paying you lose it. Does it worth it? It might be to some people. I buy a lot of music apps, if even 10% of them were subscription based I would be paying $1,000 each month.

Some of the painting apps I *bought* and enjoy are: Procreate, Affinity Photo, SketchBook (before it went free). If they make the next version of these apps, I’ll happily pay again. But when I’m ready. Not automatically. I want to be in control of my spendings. This month I’m dropping $100 on apps next few months could be zero.
