Description

AulDelay Vintage Echo Plugin (AUv3)

AulDelay is an audio effect plugin that can run standalone, or in any AU compatible host application such as Logic or GarageBand.

Overview

AulDelay is a vintage-inspired delay effect for those times you don't want a perfectly pristine digital delay sound. A combination of internal highpass and lowpass filtering, delay time modulation, and internal compression / limiting, results in delay tones with a classic retro vibe. However, unlike the vintage units that inspired it, AulDelay is a stereo effect and has a maximum delay time of 8 seconds for old-school live-looping adventures!

Parameters

Active - Toggles the effect On or Off. Note that when you set the effect to Off, you will still hear the delay repeats, but your input signal is no longer fed into the delay processing. This is a similar idea to the "trails" feature in many delay effects units and pedals.

Delay - Sets the delay time between 10ms and 8 seconds. Very short delay times used with modulation and regen can be used to create chorus and flange effects. Longer times can be fun for "Frippertronics" style looping.

L : R - Sets the ratio of the left and right delay times. For example, for a delay time of 500ms and a ratio of 1:1, you will hear a delay repeat in both channels every 500ms, just like a standard delay effect. For a ratio of 3:4, the right channel will repeat every 500ms and the left repeats every 375ms, or 333ms for a ratio of 2:3. The ratios 3:4 and 2:3 produce nice rhythmical stereo effects.

Mod - Applies Med(ium) or Deep stereo modulation to the delayed sound. Set Mod to Off for no modulation.

Regen - Sets the regeneration or feedback of the delay repeats up to 100% "endless" repeats. Note that at high Regen levels, the sound will appear to degrade in quality and become "washed-out" or "murky". This is intentional, and an attempt to capture the sound of analog delays with limited fidelity. Compression and limiting are also applied internally to prevent excessive build-up, which can also result in a "crunchy" sound at extreme settings as the repeats are squashed each time they're layered on top of each other. Again, this tends to be a sonic characteristic of analog and tape-based delays.

Tone - Sets the overall tonal colour of the delay repeats from Dark to Bright, or somewhere Warm in-between. An internal LPF is applied "destructively" to the delay repeats, so at the Dark or Warm settings, the repeats will progressively loose higher frequencies. A fixed HPF is also used internally to remove very low frequencies. Both filters, which are applied to the delayed signal only, have been tweaked to emulate the tones associated with vintage analog delays.

Mix - Sets the level of the delayed signal. Please note the dry / input signal is always present.

If the name sounds familiar, AulDelay is an improved version of the AULDELAY module developed for Voltage Modular by Waverley Instruments. The name is inspired by the Scots world "auld" (as in the song Auld Lang Syne), meaning, old, and of course AU, i.e. Audio Units. For more info and support please visit:
