This game is pretty good, but I have two problems with it: the computer is programmed to hit any of the opponent's open men, without regard to strategy. Second, when the computer Is ready to bear off, about 90% of the time when the computer rolls a one it leaves the man sitting is the one spot and moves a man further away closer to the one spot. These two flaws are biased to benefit the opponent; however, it is still a very good game and requires the opponent to use his/her strategic skills. I particularly like winning after the computer has put five of my men on the bar and I come back and win.
UPDATED REVIEW: they have changed the game and the computer will not always allow you to make moves you choose. I do not understand why. Example: I just rolled. 2 and 3. I bumped my opponent with the 2 and tried to move the same disk to a point with other men which would have made that disk safe. It did not allow that which left that disk vulnerable, and sure enough, it got bumped! TERRIBLE CHANGE TO THE GAME.
UPDATED REVIEW: I am enjoying the game more with the current updates.
...and it works. I love the environment, sound effects, manner of computer showing move available when touching a pip option, and the fast-pace. BUT... the computer wins 98% of the first rolls, and most all computer rolls are advantageous always to the computer. You can rest assured that if you ever leave a pip open, the computer WILL knock it off! PERIOD! The computer rolls doubles ad nauseum while I rarely receive any, and when I do.... it is when I’m trying to get a knocked off pip back into game play and the doubles I roll are for spots blocked in the computer’s home field. The computer makes “bad moves” and always gets away with it! In a live game with actual people and dice, the game would never be won making such strategically bad moves, but alas... the computer always WINS! I wish the game was more random in dice rolls and favored the computer LESS! I would give the app a 5+ stars rating otherwise. I’m giving it a 4 only for those things first mentioned. As far as satisfaction in game play, it is more of a 2!
Clearly cheats! Total cheating!
This game is one of two online fashion and one-player (against the computer) mode. In online mode it is possible that they do not know what they are doing so they do not get to talk and give up playing (bye-bye advertising revenue). I'm an average player with a rating hovering between 1480 and 1520 and I regularly beat me up with a higher rating than I did. I've been genuinely wanted to apologize to my adversary at times for this bias. The opposite happens playing weaker players, in their favor. In a recent game, a much weaker player than me threw two double-sixes, one double-five, a double three and two double ones with me getting no doubles at all. I'm aware of the psychological bias in this game and even factoring that, it's obvious the games cheats. It cheats in one-player mode as well as the developers obviously not a decent AI so the computer just rolls whatever dice it needs to win. Proof of this is that they do not offer the functionality of entering your own dice throws so do not show up the limitations of their own AI. Basically the developers are just after your money in a dishonest way. Nothing surprising there but we are not warned. Pity though, the interface is quite good.
