Ratings and ReviewsSee All
Beautiful, but problematic
This was one of my first RPGs ever played, but I lost the ability to play years ago when Macs stopped accepting PowerPC apps and I dislike running Windows software on my computer, so when I stumbled across it in the app store, I metaphorically slapped down my credit card for the game. It is beautiful, and some of the newer content like the new characters and their quests, adds more to the game, making it still the recognizable game I fell in love with but also giving me new content to enjoy.
I actually bought this one before the first BG as I enjoyed it much more in the past, but the first one is downloaded now, and I certainly plan to play more, since I have no self-control and I need more of BG. The replayability of this game also is still high for me, I really genuinely enjoy playing through it over and over.
I did lower my original rating by one star due to some seriously annoying issues and bugs I have found: quicksave files can (it only happened to me once, but beware) become corrupted, so I recommend saving using the save function relatively often for safety. Also, the slayer change often disappears after being used once, which is really annoying and is an old bug that was in the original and should definitely have been fixed by now. Neither reloading or sleeping fixes this.
I really wish I could give this five stars, but these bugs are really irritating.
All in all, still a beautiful, classic game.
Now worthy of 5 stars
My originaly review from 2017 gave this this game only 2 stars because the developer was unable to provide the latest version of the game on the Mac App Store for years while updated versions of the game were available on other platforms (the MAS version was stuck on version 1.3 for 3 years while the rest of the world was enjoying version 2.5).
Lo and behold, it now appears the developer finally updated the MAS version. As a result, I can now heartily recommend Baldur's Gate II Enhanced Edition. This is a classic RPG that has been given new life. Fantastic, mythic storylines filled with drama, romance, humor, and wit, Badlur's Gate EE has nearly endless replay value. Well worth the money if you love a good story and enjoy solid imaginative D&D gameplay. Buy it!
(Original 2-star review included below for reference)
It’s been 2 years since version 1.3 came out, and version for other systems and platforms have moved on past version 2.0 and then some. The developer has given nothing but non-believable excuses for why they can’t update the Mac App Store version of this game. I would have given this game 5 stars except for the fact that the Mac App Store version is seriously outdated, with hundreds more bugs than the current version available on Steam. There is no excuse for a failure to update of this magnitude. Do not buy.

Good to hear!
No hope for updates?
I’m adding my voice to the complaints about a complete lack of updates since 1.3. It’s as if Beamdog has abandoned the Mac App Store version of this game and that is severely disappointing. I’d say, “Lesson learned. I’ll just buy games on another platform from now on,” but how is that an acceptable outcome?
Such a shame, because while a number of aspects of the game are dated, it’s still a great deal of fun to get that D&D fix. (Especially when it’s hard to get a group of friends together for the actual tabletop game!)

Edit: The new update is here!
Old reply: Hello! The 2.5 builds for Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition, and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition for the Mac App Store are still with QA.
Future patches for the Mac App Store will have the same cadence as our patches for other platforms. We understand we’ve made our Mac App Store fans wait long for the 2.5 update, and we’re going to do better!
