Description

Improving roadway safety, one curve at a time.

Designed with precision, easy to use, and beautifully crafted, Ballbank is a digital inclinometer used for determining advisory speeds for horizontal roadway curves. It measures, in degrees, the combined effect of superelevation, vehicle roll, and lateral acceleration. For decades, the ball bank indicator method is one of the most commonly used methods by engineers worldwide for determining driver discomfort that correlates to setting the advisory speed.

Setup your phone on your dashboard like you would typically setup a ball bank device. Press Start and drive. No need for a second person to write down the results. Ballbank records all of the data that you need and saves it as a video directly to the Photos app. The raw data, including all of the curve data results, is saved as a text file. The text file can be exported and emailed.

Ballbank not only shows you the continuous angle reading and speed, but calculates the maximum smooth angle, average speed, and lateral g force for every curve. Linear distance, lat/long, altitude, date, and time are all recorded too. The map makes it easy to see exactly where all of the data was collected.

Ballbank records the video of your drive, which allows you to evaluate the driver performance on every curve, document all of the existing signs, assess the site safety, and verify pavement conditions that could impact the results of your testing.

Both Imperial and Metric units are supported.

What’s New

Version 1.8

Fixed a bug that caused data files to not export if your device region is outside of the U.S. or when using 24-hour time format.

Issue with Exporting Data

First off, I’ve really enjoyed using this app. I’ve only run into three issues while using it. The first is when trying to export the data files. I had the files selected and clicked the export button, but nothing happened. I realized that the issue was I had deleted my “Mail” app that came installed on my phone. Once I reinstalled that “Mail” app the export button worked and I was able to email myself the files. The only other issue I’ve had is how the data files are organized. It looks like they’re sorted by time of day, which can be confusing when you have multiple days worth of data. It’s tricky to go back and remember which location was started at what time and day. Maybe there could be a way to give the files a name and then sort based on that or at least sort by date and not time. Lastly, it seems like when I export the files there are multiple readings at a single location. Specifically, it looks like there are 10 readings per coordinate pair, where everything is the same between the readings except for the Ballbank value. All of this extra data makes the post-processing kind of annoying. With all of that said, it’s definitely the best Ballbank app that I’ve found. Thanks for making it!

Developer Response ,

Thank you for the feedback. The default Mail app was the only export option, but more options have been added in the latest version.

The readings save at 25 per second in the files. Essentially you can append the time stamp in 0.04 second increments to achieve the differences. I will explore doing this automatically in the export.

Grest functionality- power intensive

I really like the ability to video a ball bank run - but you need to have a power cord if you intend to Do more than a couple of curves - I used 30% of my battery in a half hour

Developer Response ,

Yes, the app is power intensive. It uses the highest accuracy GPS along with the accelerometer, magnetometer, camera, and 3D graphics at the same time. It is recommended to plug it in while using. If you don’t need the camera, turning it off will conserve energy.

Great app but having functionality issues.

Incredibly useful app. But stopped working for me unfortunately. After a few test runs when I click record, the app is unresponsive. Also within saved data when I hit export, again, unresponsive. On test runs I had hit save, and it seems the videos are nowhere to be found. Running on iPhone 7 with iOS 11.0.3. Any advice would love to use this app if I can get it to work.

Developer Response ,

Often times, a full power down and reboot of your phone will fix an unresponsive app. There were also some issues when iOS 11.0 came out. Apple has fixed some of these bugs since then. Try again with the latest iOS version. If you continue to experience problems, please feel free to send a message on the Facebook page. Thanks!
