Ratings and Reviews
Solid, classic jRPG gameplay featuring amazing art and sound.
Joe Madureira is a talented artist and this game begins with him and the world he has created and the characters populating it. His artwork, turned into a video game looks amazing. The characters themselves and interesting and colorful while also breaking some molds concerning the “classes” system. For instance, that giant War Golem? Yeah he’s the party healer.
Be sure to rest frequently at the Inn as you progress through the game. Story scenes between the characters add depth, making the characters feel more fleshed out and explain in more detail the events that took place in the original comic books. However, no knowledge of the comic is required, the game keeps the past in the past for the most part and you can infer the rest.
Gameplay is turn based, the order determined by each character’s haste stat. What follows in the usual attack, item and special abilities. Using a skill tree system, split into two for each character, you have a lot of room to customize your character and since you can at any time respec your abilities at no cost, feel free to make specific builds for specific fights.
A lovely soundtrack, great animations and plenty secrets and things to do, the only reason I took away a star is because it unfortunately kept the most unwanted jRPG system. Only the characters who fight get exp, there is no exp share. Which minds grinding each character to keep up with the rest of the group.
Best App on the Market
Are you looking for a top-notch RPG? Perhaps a strategy game with lots of skills to choose from and weapons to create? Maybe you’re just looking for something with a long play time and that will challenge you. If so, this is the game for you.
Bad first — it has glitches. The second dungeon had be force quit at least four times which was rather annoying. That’s my only bad.
The good? It’s based on a comic but I’ve never read it and felt it was very easy to jump into the story anyway. It has tons of skills and two skill paths for each character meaning it’s replayable. It’s graphics are the best. The dungeons are super tough on the hardest difficulty but still beatable. Last, I’ve played for 6 and a half hours and only feel MAYBE 1/4th done. Probably less.
Awesome with small issues
Really great RPG: fun, complex, beautiful, good writing even.
My only gripes are that the save capabilities are not very casual-gaming friendly. Especially in areas (dungeons), where I’d get distracted irl and come back an hour later, not having touched the phone, and the game has to load again. And it’s not a short load. And I have to start at the beginning of the dungeon each time. It’s gotten to the point where I fear doing anything with my phone while gaming, like answer a call or take a picture, as it’ll pretty reliably have me start over. On a console, this is a non-issue obviously. On a phone though... it’s annoying.
That and the lack of fast travel options. There is a teleport system and that’s great. But after finishing a dungeon, you have to waltz on back through the whole thing - empty as it now is - and even with the teleport pads peppered around the place I always found myself wondering why there wasn’t an “exit area” button that would pop up once the area boss is dealt with.
UPDATE: okay, so the mana stone before each boss, if you go back to it, will let you exit the dungeon right away. Could have been clearer, and as I didn’t figure that out until my 4th dungeon I’ll leave the issue up.
Notwithstanding these little road bumps it’s the most refined, cool, and most importantly anti-micro-transaction RPG game to hit the App Store in years, says me.
