DnD ultra lite with no rewards

D20 rolls for attacks and saves feel an awful lot like waiting for the real die to settle, the two options after every roll (left or right) for battle, rest, or chance lead to monsters that cant be beaten by 1-3 level characters. If you play the chance game (only choose the chance or rest) far enough, the game pushes you into battle with the behoarder with 247 hp who kills you in two swipes. I got to lvl3 with 32hp and behoarder killed me in two rounds while i made zero successful attacks against his 18 ac. Trudgey and seemingly rewardless, this game. 2-7 gold from each run will take 800 runs to get to buy any other starting character.

Pretty Much Unplayable

I don’t often write reviews unless I’m thoroughly impressed or depressed with a game. D&D is a classic and a favorite of mine and, don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a little bit of rng spice. That all being said, this game is just... a good concept with poor execution? Visually, it looks pristine, but let’s talk actual gameplay. The balancing is terrible. The game makes you choose between items or levels, but both seem to be entirely sporadic with the items failing to scale vs the risk to gain them and the monsters becoming boss level after 5 battles. Either way, you’re going to make a bad choice. This would be accept if there was the “grind element” to the game. This being hand in hand with permanent continuation aspects such as leveling, gear, skill trees, etc. But each run yields you a measly bit of gold to unlock classes that don’t even seem worth the investment.

All in all, I think with enough tweaking and redesign the game could be enjoyable. However, for now, I’m just left questioning how I just wasted an hour of my life and why this game was released without a balance check.

I want to like this game

The art and writing for this game were very enjoyable. Everything from the monster design, and the injured hero portraits really nailed the tone as both humorous and thematic.

Gameplay is problematic to put it nicely, and this is after the recent patch. Games are about making choices, and I rarely feel i have any real choices with this game. Combat is rolled randomly, and you only get choices if things are going well and you have collected items for your bag. But it seems that normally there is a clear good choice versus an inferior choice. As an example, if i don’t have enough hitpoints to select a combat room, then the choice has already been made for me. In game design terms this is referred to as a false choice, the player really only has one option.

After a couple hours with this app, i just cant see continuing. I’m sad because the presentation is so solid.
