Better Rename is the most complete renaming solution available on the market today. That’s why, since 1996, tens of thousands of hobbyists, professionals and businesses depend on Better Rename to organize and maintain files.
Better Rename's user interface supports complex renaming tasks without sacrificing ease and speed of use. Simply drag the files you want to rename straight from the Finder into the large preview table or the application icon.. or use our Finder context menu and hot key.
INSTANT PREVIEW
The Instant Preview feature eliminates guesswork and costly errors and helps you find the right settings quickly and accurately by providing as-you-type feedback and interactive change highlighting.
MOST COMPLETE FEATURE SET AVAILABLE
Better Rename offers a complete set of renaming actions that are organized into 15 categories covering all the text, character, position, conversion and truncation features that you would expect, but it does not stop there.
MADE FOR DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHERS
Photographers use the advanced sequence number and date & time features to clean up their portfolios or prepare photos for delivery to their client. Better Rename knows how to extract EXIF shooting date and time information from digital camera images and exploit them in creating sequence numbers or adding time and date information to the file name. Support for all major RAW formats (including JPEG, HEIC, HEIF, ARW, CRW, CR2, CR3, THM, NEF, TIFF, RAF, ORF, MRW, DNG, PEF, SRF, etc.) extends this to professional photographers. Even multiple shots captured in the same second are dealt with reliably.
POWER USERS WELCOME
System administrators, web masters and other power users will appreciate the presence of advanced features, such as regular expression support, conversion to Windows NTFS/SMB compatible names, file filtering, the ability to import file names from a database, a spreadsheet or any other source that can produce plain or tab-delimited text files. The ability to save a record of the current and new file names greatly facilitates tracking your files.
LOVES YOUR MUSIC
Music lovers can use the built-in MP3/AAC support to exploit the ID3 meta-data tags embedded in most music files to create their own naming schemes for their music collection. Meta-data information from MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, APE, M4V and iTunes music store files are supported.
COMBINE MULTIPLE RENAMING STEPS
The multi-step renaming feature allows multiple renaming steps to be combined to deal with complex renaming jobs in a single operation. Unlike other tools, Better Rename allows any number of renaming actions to be combined, re-ordered, copied and deleted.
INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH ENGINE
Better Rename takes file renaming to a new level of sophistication by introducing an advanced 64-bit multi-threaded renaming engine that solves many problems that other file renamers simply leave unaddressed. The database-backed renaming engine automatically resolves file name conflicts using a range of configurable parameters and prevents deadlocks. We care about such things so that you don't have to.

Subscription model?? Yeah …. No …
pscarnegie
I’ve loved and used this App for years. I’ve never had an issue purchasing the major updates as I’m well aware of the development time expended - but moving to a monthly/yearly subscription model?? Yeah that’s where I draw the line. Didn’t see anything in the v12 description of changes other than “in app purchases”. Wasn’t until I downloaded it did I see that little snafu. Quickly deleted. I’ll stick with v11 until it no longer works than I’ll just find a different utility. Sad really. An awesome utility ruined by greed.
Just lost a customer

Changing the rules in a business relationship mid-stream isn’t a very good recipe for success. I get it, the AppStore may not work the way you want it to, but subscription pricing has been supported for a long time, and those of us who don’t buy subscription products avoid them for a reason. I read your response to another review and it reeked of whining and complaining, and not at all about how to maintain your loyal customers. I have loved working with BR and am sorry to have to find another, but another I will find.
Crooked business practices
Sixtwentysix
I purchased Better Rename back around 9 and now they damaged the file so I had to download this new subscription version. We have to stop supporting app developers that practice business like this.
Developer Response
I understand that you're upset, but there is no damaged file. Better Rename 9 came out on the 29th February 2012 and was replaced in 2015 with version 10. Then versions 11 and 12 followed. You can still download version 9 from the account section of the App Store and use it on the macOS versions from 2015, and it still worked reliably until a few years ago.Software needs maintenance and version 12 is the result of years of additional development effort put in by me, and yes I need to make a living selling software in order to do so, and that means that yes, you will be expected to pay for an upgrade around every 5-7 years. That's what supporting software developers looks like in practice: pay them for their work, so they can afford to do their work. The App Store makes things harder because there is no neat way of charging for discounted upgrades, and it has changed business practices towards subscriptions rather than periodic paid upgrades. So here on the App Store, I have gone to subscriptions because I was tired of fighting against the grain of what Apple wants me to do.My kids have never *bought* software, Gen Z prefers to subscribe to stuff for a cheap monthly fee rather than "owning" (what a lame concept) software. The maintenance effort is backed in, so it's a way of making a living the App Store way.If you do not like subscriptions, you need to look outside of the App Store. I am not allowed by App Store rules to mention anything outside of it, and trust me it would make my life and my users life easier if I was.If you want to resolve your problem, it's best to contact me directly rather than letting off steam and leaving one star reviews. You can do so at support@publicspace.net and it is much easier to find a mutually agreeable solution than you might think.
Move to subscription disappointing
jumptwice
Lifetime upgrade pricing is requested. I’ve been using Better Rename for years. I purchased a license to a new version of the app every time the new version wouldn’t work with my new macOS version. That license would last me years. The features from several versions ago served me just fine. The justification to move to a subscription model is weak. No added value to us end users. If you use this app a lot, we’re essentially being forced to pay along a yearly cost model. Before we’d pay every 2 to 3 years minimum. Boo!
