NOTE: Most WebSDR websites currently do not work on iPhone OS 16. This problem affects all webview browsers on iPhone. We hope it will be fixed in iOS 17.

WebSDR is an Audio Unit Plugin that plays audio from Software Defined Radio (SDR) streams. It allows you to incorporate the sound of live radio into a live music performance.

A software defined radio is a device with an antenna that connects to a computer and allows it to receive live radio broadcasts. It features a wide variety of protocols; in addition to standard AM and FM modes found in most consumer radios it typically includes modes for LSB, USB, CW and other settings used to listen in on the CB radios used by taxi drives, marine weather stations, air traffic control towers, amateur radio enthusiasts and many other types of radio broadcasts.

The signals you can access using this app are not your own local radio stations; rather they are the radio stations in the vicinity of a collection of free servers, many of them operated by universities. These servers are positioned in many different countries around the world so using this plugin you can listen in on a variety of radio signals in a wide variety of languages and cultures.

The crackly sound of an old-style AM broadcast or a conversation between taxi drivers on a CB radio is a musical flavour that can not be replicated with other plugins. If you are looking for some really unique and interesting material to include in your performances or mixes, this plugin will supply.

This plugin requires Javascript in order to play sound. Unfortunately that means that the UI must be open the entire time you are using it. When the UI is closed Javascript stops running, similar to the way a website stops playing audio when you close a tab in your browser.

It works EXCEPT…..

Sadly when using inside of AUM, the audio cuts out when you close the window. I wrote the developer but never got back a response. I’m a pretty experienced and seasoned ios music creator used to creating complex setups in AUM, Drambo, so it’s kind of a drag to have to squeeze down the window to a tiny little square and tuck it out of the way.

Developer Response ,

WebSDR runs on Javascript. In iOS devices Javascript only runs when the browser window is open. For this app, that means you need to keep the plugin window open somehow. If you’re running AUM you can work around this problem by opening the window and moving it off the screen in one corner so that it doesn’t block the view of your other plugins. In apps like drambo I am not aware of any work around other than keeping it visible on the screen at all times. We explained this in the app description but it’s good to clarify it here in this comment too so that future customers don’t get disappointed by false expectations.

We apologize for the confusion. If you bought the app hoping for it to work with the window closed, you can apply to Apple to get a refund through the App Store.

Awesome app…with one big problem

I really love this app, because it allows me to hear HF anywhere, anytime. Unfortunately, when I try to use the WebSDR app with my AirPods Pro, I get a continuous stuttering/glitching effect that only shows up with this specific app. If I could use the app with my earbuds, that would be a huge plus! Update: This works great as an AUv3 in AUM! I’ve started learning iOS music production, and I’ve got the plugin routing FT8 data signals into SpaceFields to come out sounding like the soundtrack of a cosmic horror movie or something—which is freaking awesome! As a bonus, my headset works right when I use the app in AUM. Still wish it would also work in “regular app” mode, but even without that, this app is one of the coolest I’ve seen in awhile!

UI improvements, but no audio

UI has been improved and app itself has nice interface. But there’s no audio… only for a split second and then it mutes. No way to recover. Requesting refund. Will try again after the next update…
