Probably very functional, but difficult to use

The menu icons are not intuitive and are not labeled, so random clicking is the only way to teach yourself how things work. Online instructions are sparse and largely based on earlier versions of the software. Birdfont's own tutorials skip so many steps that they are not useful. The command intended for previewing font glyphs appears not to work, opening instead a "file save" and then "file open" dialog box, and never actually creating a preview at all. I think the learning curve is too steep here.

Awesome, but needs some polish

This appears to be the only font editor in the Mac App Store. There is a non App Store version of this app on the web that seems to be popular.

It did everything I needed to do, but I was fumbling all the way through using it - used command-z a lot.

There is nothing to tell you what the tools are. Some are obvious but most are just symbols that mean nothing to the average user. Some tools tips when hovering over them would be great.

Also, there is no help file, or manual. There is a manual/tutorial on the website, but it is severely lacking in details. It doesn’t tell what all the tool icons are either. There are even a few videos, but they have no sound so you are just basically watching someone move the cursor around and don’t know when/if he’s clicking the mouse or pressing a key or anything. I’m sure the developer knows exactly what all the tools are and how to use them, but how about helping out users that are new to editing fonts.

It’s a great app, and I was hesitent to pay $15 for it because even the description in the app store is almost nonexistent. I basically took a chance that it wasn’t complete garbage since it’s the only font editor in the app store. Now that I’ve played with it, I would have paid $50 or $60 for it. But it would sure be nice to know how to use it. Would easily be a 5 star app if it was a LOT more user friendly.

Takes some getting used to, but then works great.

It will take you a little while to get used to the UI, but once you understand how it works, it does everything you want and more. I’ve used the app to create a variety of fonts by now and the fonts work as intended. I have to admit though that I worked on the designs in Illustrator first and used BirdFont to create the fonts from there.
I am by no means a professional Type designer, but for my purposes (creating unusual and exotic fonts for game development) this app is a life saver.
Couldn’t be more happy about it.
