more I’ve been using BookShelves for a while now and honestly it's one of those apps that just does what it says it does, really well. My ebook collection is finally actually organized and easy to browse. The design looks great and feels clean. Nothing cluttered or confusing, everything is where you'd expect it to be. I mostly use it to organize my ebooks and it handles that perfectly. No complaints there at all. Also really excited for some of the upcoming features. Feels like the app is just going to keep getting better.
Developer Response Thanks, glad you like it!

I can't help but feel that my everlasting search for the perfect ePub reader might be coming to an end. Bookshelves feels fresh, full featured and visually unobtrusive, while managing to stay out of your way. Oh, and the "analytics" off-switch is a very nice touch - it is highly appreciated! Overall, a great little app at a very affordable price.
Developer Response Thank you for the kind words, Sarassine! Really glad BookShelves is working well for you.Good news on the Discover section: version 1.0.24 adds a toggle in Settings to hide it completely. And thanks for noticing the analytics switch.

I really love this app’s clean and intuitive interface, as well as OPDS integration. A couple things that I think would make it perfect: 1. More style and layout options for the reader (paragraph margin, word and character spacing, 2-panel layout on iPad & Mac, etc.). 2. Support series metadata (So if I import 2 books in a series from Standard Ebooks or Calibre, for example, they can be grouped together).

Reader -- Books with obfuscated fonts now display correctly instead of being rejected as DRM-protected. Both IDPF and Adobe font obfuscation methods are supported.
Reader -- Fixed scroll mode breaking stylesheet images and backgrounds when navigating between chapters.
EPUB -- More accurate metadata. Books using EPUB 3 title-type are now parsed correctly, multi-rootfile containers pick the right content, and manifest items with missing media types are handled instead of dropped.
OPDS Catalogs -- More reliable connections to password-protected servers. Covers, search, and re-authentication now work correctly on servers that use cookies or basic auth. Fixed a stall when loading large Calibre libraries.
Import -- Fixed manga and comic series being flagged as duplicates when importing multiple volumes.
Comics -- SVG covers are now rendered on iOS, where they previously showed a generic image.
Performance -- Replaced the third-party reading engine with a custom-built one. Books open faster, the app launches quicker, and the download size is smaller.
Stability -- Hardened archive handling against oversized or malformed files, and fixed decompression failures on some EPUBs with slightly misreported file sizes.
1.0.31 Jul 10
Edit Metadata -- Take control of your library. Edit any book's title, author, subtitle, series, description, publisher, ISBN, language, and publication date right from the book details. Your changes are saved separately from the original file, and you can revert any field with one tap.
OPDS Catalogs -- Rebuilt catalog browsing on a faster engine with broader compatibility. Connecting to a server now has a cleaner, fully translated setup screen.
Shelves -- Redesigned the new-shelf and edit-shelf screens with a cleaner, more consistent layout, and shelf counts now update instantly.
Reader -- Bigger, easier-to-tap controls on iPhone and iPad, plus more accurate text selection and highlighting.
Reliability -- More dependable iCloud and on-device storage, so your books stay available when you need them, plus a range of stability fixes across the app.
Import -- Fixed some valid FictionBook (FB2) files being rejected, and stopped PDFs and comics from being mislabeled when added from an OPDS catalog.
Localization -- Filled in missing translations and corrected accented characters across all 33 languages.

1.0.30 Jul 2
Localization -- BookShelves is now available in 33 languages. The entire app -- library, reader, settings, and all menus -- is translated. You can also pick a per-app language on iOS in Settings > Apps > BookShelves.
Reader -- Images no longer split across page breaks in paginated mode.
Reader -- Scroll mode saves and restores your position more accurately when returning to a book.

Calibre -- Wireless transfers from KOReader no longer stall when multiple books are sent in quick succession.
OPDS -- Book downloads from the built-in OPDS server are now streamed instead of loaded entirely into memory, fixing timeouts on large files.
Stability -- Rebuilt the reader's internal content engine for faster startup and more reliable background recovery on iOS.

Reader — More accurate reading progress. The progress percentage is now based on actual content size rather than an estimate, so it no longer jumps around when you turn pages or navigate backward.
Reader — Book-wide page numbers. The progress bar now shows your position as "Page 47 of 312" instead of the previous "Chapter 15/233 . Page 3/6" format. Page numbers are stable across sessions.
Reader — Dark and tinted themes now apply more consistently to books that ship their own colors, so styled pages no longer show stray light backgrounds in dark mode.
Comics — Rebuilt the comic engine for more reliable opening of CBZ, CBR, and CB7 files, including a fix for comics that could previously get stuck on a loading spinner. Manga reading direction is now remembered per book.
Discover — Japanese public domain literature from Aozora Bunko (青空文庫) is now available as a source.
1.0.26 Jun 16

1.0.24 May 20
Reader — New scroll reading mode. Switch between page-by-page and continuous scroll in the reader appearance menu. Scroll mode loads every chapter into one flowing document so you can read without page breaks.
Reader — Scroll mode tracks your chapter and position as you read. Switch back to paginated mode and your place is preserved.
Reader — The reader now auto-downloads books stored in iCloud instead of showing an error. A progress indicator appears while the file transfers.
Stability — Improved crash recovery in the reader. If the system reclaims WebView memory, the reader restores your position instead of going blank.
Stability — Safer handling of books deleted by iCloud sync while a view is open. The app now degrades gracefully instead of crashing.
Stability — Moved network services off the main thread for smoother scrolling and faster book opening.
Import — Faster imports for large collections. The import pipeline no longer blocks the main thread.
Security — Archives with spoofed filenames are now rejected.
1.0.23 May 12
Reader — Fixed RTL page numbering so page 1 shows the first content, not the last. Progress percentage now tracks correctly in Arabic and Hebrew books.
Reader — Smoother page turns on iOS. Swipe gestures are more responsive and no longer occasionally swallowed by the web view.
Reader — The reader now recovers gracefully if the system reclaims its memory under pressure, instead of showing a blank page.
iCloud — Opening a book stored in iCloud now shows a download progress bar on the cover instead of a plain spinner. You can see exactly how much has downloaded before reading starts.
iCloud — More reliable storage migration when switching between local and iCloud storage. The app verifies every file after migration and reports any problems.
Reader — Chapter headings stay centered when text justification is enabled.
Reader — CJK ruby annotations (furigana, pinyin, hanja readings) are now preserved correctly instead of being stripped during import.
Security — Hardened archive parsing and the built-in web server against crafted input.
Performance — Faster library loading for large collections. Reduced memory usage when browsing books with many authors or tags.
Stability — Fixed a crash when creating bookmarks or highlights after navigating between books. Fixed a background crash on iOS. General reliability improvements.
1.0.22 May 6
Reader — Full right-to-left support for Arabic, Hebrew, and other RTL languages. Page direction, navigation, tap zones, swipe gestures, and the table of contents all follow the book's reading direction automatically.
Reader — Lists, blockquotes, and table cells now render correctly in RTL books. CSS uses logical properties so layout adapts to any text direction.
iCloud — Books stored in iCloud can now be opened, exported, and sent to KOReader without waiting for a manual download first. The app materializes cloud-only files on demand and shows a Cancel button if the download takes too long.
iCloud — More reliable file handling across the board. Folder imports, cover repair, and the OPDS server all detect iCloud placeholders instead of silently skipping cloud-only books.
Import — Files picked from iCloud Drive that haven't been downloaded yet are now fetched automatically before import, so cloud-only files no longer fail with a cryptic error.
OPDS — A warning banner appears when a slow server can't load some entries, instead of silently dropping them.
Stability — Replaced polling loops with event-driven downloads across code paths. Improved CloudKit sync diagnostics. General reliability improvements.

10.0.20 Apr 28

Import — Clearer error messages for MOBI files with DRM or unusual compression. Internal parser details no longer leak into the error dialog.
Reader — Improved error screen with a retry option.
PDF — Better diagnostics when a PDF can't be opened. Unreadable and empty PDFs now show distinct, helpful error messages instead of a generic failure.
iOS — Fixed a crash triggered by long-pressing images in the reader.

Feedback — Bug reports and rendering issue reports are now delivered more reliably.
Stability — Fixed a race condition. Improved crash diagnostics. General reliability improvements.
1.0.19 Apr 25
Reader — Smoother text flow across page breaks. Long paragraphs now wrap naturally where they meet the bottom of a page instead of being pre-split, matching how the rest of the book is laid out.
Reader — Crisper chapter titles. Fixed a subtle alignment shift between the title's foreground and faded background layers so titles render pixel-perfect across themes.
PDF — Fixed a rare crash when opening PDFs while Apple Intelligence is active. PDFs now load through a path that's compatible with on-device intelligence features.
Email to E-Reader — More reliable when sending books that live in iCloud. The app now waits for the book file to fully download from iCloud before composing the email, so sends no longer fail silently when a book is offloaded.
Import — Clearer error messages when a file can't be opened. You'll now see the actual reason — wrong format, truncated download, or unsupported - instead of a generic "conversion failed."
OPDS — Friendlier guidance when adding HTTP-only catalogs. App Transport Security blocks plain HTTP for most servers; the app now explains this up front and links to a new support article. Local-network and link-local addresses are still allowed.
1.0.18 Apr 17
Reader — Cleaner tables in plain EPUBs with bordered cells, bold centered headers, and captions. Publisher styles take precedence when a book ships its own table formatting.
Reader — Horizontal rules no longer override decorative publisher dividers like fleurons. Default rule is a muted line that tints to match your theme.
Reader — Theme-aware borders across tables, blockquotes, and dividers for Light, Sepia, Dark, Vintage Paper, Night Sky, Forest, Ocean Mist, Midnight, and Dark Academia.
OPDS — Friendlier error messages when a catalog can't be reached.
Library — Fixed an issue where a small number of accounts could be left pinned to iCloud storage after a past migration. Recovery now checks iCloud availability first so books already on iCloud stay reachable.

Library — Fixed an issue where imported books could appear as "Book Not Available" after restarting the app.
Sync — Improved sync reliability for reader preferences (font, view mode, e-reader email) across devices.
OPDS — Helpful hint when a server URL contains a common typo like /odps or /opsd.
1.0.16 Apr 13
MOBI — Added support for HuffCDIC-compressed MOBI files. Books that previously failed to open now load correctly.
Calibre — Reading progress now syncs both ways with KOReader. Your local reading position is pushed to the device during sync, and book matching uses unique identifiers for more reliable pairing.
Reader — Search results across chapters now highlight reliably. Fixed an issue where navigating to a result in a different chapter could miss the highlight.
OPDS Server — Fixed high CPU usage when OPDS clients fetched multiple resources at once. Added pagination to the books API.
Library — Importing large collections no longer causes the library to freeze.
Stability — Faster and more reliable Pro status detection across devices. Improved app responsiveness on launch. General performance and reliability improvements.
1.0.15 Apr 11
Discover — Browse 1,200+ Spanish public domain books from the Biblioteca Nacional de España. Sort by title or author across all sources.
Reader — Bundled STIX Two Math font for proper MathML rendering on iOS. Cleaned up font stacks across all languages for sharper text on Apple devices. CJK languages now use serif fonts for a more natural book reading experience.
Calibre — Improved connection security: device operations now require completed authentication. Fixed potential issues with file size handling, network connection cleanup, and password saving in settings.
1.0.14 Apr 2
Discover — Search now works for Standard Ebooks. Dismiss button added to the book detail sheet on both macOS and iOS.
iOS — Fixed a crash caused by Apple Intelligence indexing PDF reader content on iOS 26.3+.
Comics — Added a size guard on ComicInfo.xml to prevent issues with malformed archives. Fixed timezone handling for publication dates.
Security — Stricter validation for ZIP and EPUB archives: bounds checks on central directory entries prevent reading past the buffer with crafted files.
1.0.13 Mar 30
Reader — Choose from 8 bundled reading fonts including Literata, Lora, Merriweather, Noto Serif, Noto Sans, Atkinson Hyperlegible, Lexend, and OpenDyslexic. New controls for line spacing, horizontal margins, text justification, and bold text. Use Publisher Font mode to preserve the book's original typography.
Comics — Right-to-left reading mode for manga. Reverses tap zones, arrow keys, swipe direction, page slider, and spread layout. Auto-detected from metadata or toggled manually.
Mac — Faded title overlay when the toolbar is hidden.
iPad — Appearance panel uses a sheet instead of a popover for more room. Collapsible font picker with typeface previews. Font size controls in the toolbar.
Import — Calibre libraries with multiple formats per book now import only the best format instead of creating duplicates. Exploded EPUB folders from Apple Books are automatically repackaged on import. CBZ and CBR files can be opened directly from the Files app.
1.0.12 Mar 27
Version 1.0.11:
Import — Importing large collections is significantly faster. Duplicate books are detected more efficiently, and imports now save your progress as they go — if something interrupts a big import, you keep the books that already finished. MOBI files with unusual metadata are handled gracefully instead of stopping the import.
Export — Export your highlights and notes as Markdown, JSON, or CSV directly from the right-click menu on any book. Great for study notes or sharing favorite passages.
Reader — Fixed an issue where highlighting text could cause the page to jump to a different position. Highlights now sync immediately across pages as you navigate. Reading progress bar shows correctly from the first page.
OPDS — When connecting to a server that requires a login, you now see helpful instructions instead of a confusing error message.
iOS — PDFs use less memory, which prevents crashes when reading large documents on older devices. PDF search is now case-insensitive and shows better context for results. The file picker is more reliable when importing from iCloud Drive and other locations. Sheets and overlays no longer dismiss unexpectedly during use. Added a close button to full-screen sheets for easier navigation.
iPad — Fixed PDF search on iPad. Improved stability when using the app in single-window mode.
iCloud — Saving books to iCloud is more reliable. Temporary network hiccups are retried automatically instead of showing an error. Fixed an issue where book availability could show incorrectly while iCloud was syncing.
Stability — Fixed a reading session tracking issue that could cause brief freezes. More reliable Calibre sync. General performance and reliability improvements.
1.0.11 Mar 27
Version 1.0.10
Reader — Optional reading progress bar shows how far you are in the current chapter. Two new themes: Midnight (pure black for OLED displays) and Quiet (neutral gray). Each theme now uses its own accent color throughout the reader UI. Toolbar no longer appears when swiping between pages.
iOS — Pull-to-refresh in the library triggers iCloud sync. New sync status and import progress indicators on iPhone.
Library — "Open New Books At" setting lets you choose whether to start at the cover or the first chapter.
Accessibility — Added missing labels to icon-only buttons and controls. Improved Sepia theme contrast ratio.
Stability — Faster shelf loading for large libraries. Fixed PDF two-page spread animations on iOS. Performance and reliability improvements.

EPUB Reader — Slide animations between chapters on iOS. New page slider you can show or hide.
Import — Double-click an ebook in Finder or share it from Files on iOS — it opens directly in BookShelves.
