Good start - needs some work

I am very happy to be able to buy ebooks from indie stores. Some things about the app need improving :
- while the text size is adjustable, the largest setting is still barely large enough for me to read without eye strain. It is not large enough for someone needing the equivalent of large-print books.
- something about page turning is too sensitive or works wrong: if I touch the right side sometimes the text skips forward several pages.

Reading experience is sorely lacking

No ability to adjust line height or margins (seriously?). Only “serif” or “sans-serif” as font options. Only 4 font size options. Spacing added between paragraphs that don’t have them in other e-readers. Italics in the book getting stripped that are there in other e-readers (this is inexcusable). Formatting for things like inline letters/epigraphs look bad, where they look nice in other e-readers. Only purple as dark mode. No ability to “zoom out” to see multiple pages for a sense of where you are in a chapter. No “time left in book/chapter” estimations.

If Bookshop hopes to move people away from Kindle, they need to seriously improve the reading experience in this app, ASAP, or all this fanfare about an alternative option will fall flat as soon as readers try reading something on the app.

Interesting choice to offer a toggle between infinite scroll and normal pagination; I guess that’s a cool feature. And the store is fine, although still pretty limited. But so, so disappointing how much is missing or messed up in the reader when so many eyes are on it right now.

I really hope the developers are prioritizing improvements to the reading experience above all else, or this is a non-starter.

Yay

Haven’t fully explored the app yet, but it doesn’t easily show up on search yet so leaving a 5-star to boost. Great to have an alternative that supports independent bookstores!

First impressions: Reading interface is fairly intuitive. Slightly awkward that you can’t buy the books in-app but must buy them in a browser first. Wish I could transfer them easily to other apps to read.
