Functional, super Irritating

Additional: I generally do three half-hour sets per day. After each set, I tell the app the new exercise I’d like to do. Although the first exercise took no extra time to “set up” in the app, subsequent exercises can take 5 or 10 minutes to “prepare”. I wait and wait. Sometimes, I can quit the app and restart it to avoid this. Other times, quitting and restarting doesn’t help. This is also super frustrating.

In general, this app does what it is supposed to do. But it does it in extremely irritating ways. No matter how you set the audio settings, it plays music all the time. I cannot find any way to turn off the music, and still have audio alerts. I use the app visually, watching a video on my iPad at the same time as working out, and just want the audio alerts between intervals. But there is no way to make that happen. Music, really irritating music, plays all the time. Everyone in my home complains about it. In addition, the UI is terribly finicky. Any attempt to modify the length of the intervals almost always brings up the section “for you”. I fight with the app constantly. All the app’s problems would be easy to fix. I have requested these changes several times, speaking with people on the phone, and sending email. In every case, the support for this app has been absolutely worthless. These problems won’t stop me from using the BowFlex, which I really enjoy. I just hate this application.

Buggy and loses past data

This app was automatically “upgraded” without my involvement. The first thing I noticed was that the calories/minute scale only went from 0-30 compared to 0-100 in the previous version. The next thing I noticed was that Max was only giving me about 2/3 of the calorie burn that I had been getting for the past months. The next thing I noticed is that, even though I was staying at the top of the calorie burning scale for every interval, after I finished the recorded and saved data showed me well below the burn for each interval which could explain the lower calorie count. Also, you apparently can only take the Fitness Assessment one time. The only way I can see to burn the same calories is to way overdo each interval until Max finally catches up. Too bad. I really liked the old version and I wish I could revert.

Developer Response ,

Hello ssquaredh and thank you very much for being a customer! We do apologize if the update caused any trouble!

The Burn Rate display scale was updated so that it could display different ranges based on a user's current fitness level. This did introduce an issue into the workout interface, but thankfully this has been addressed on the back-end and to correct any lingering issues and appropriately set the Burn Rate scale, please re-run the Fitness Assessment.

The Fitness Assessment can be ran multiple times and we actually recommend doing so occasionally or after life-changes just to keep things fully up-to-date. To re-run the Fitness Assessment...

Launch the app and tap "Workouts" near the bottom.
Look for "Fitness Assessment" near the top-right.
-- If you do not see this option, look for three lines or a similar options symbol just to the right of "Programs".
-- Tapping on the options symbol to the right of "Programs" will then display the "Fitness Assessment" option.
Use the "Start" button to begin the assessment.

Should you continue to have any issues such as things displaying incorrectly after re-running the Fitness Assessment, please do let us know! From within the app, tap "Profile", and then use "Feedback & Support" to contact our App Team directly. We reply directly within 1-2 business days and we're happy to help! - Bowflex

It’s the little stuff

While I can appreciate the time and effort that has gone into revamping the application, I’m disappointed that little things seem to be missing from the experience. For example, take something as simple as saving preferences. Each time I log into the app and look at the personal recommendations I have to change the duration and difficulty fields. I would prefer to be able to save that as a default. I literally have to click a button that says Save for that session, but have to do that each time I use the app.
I’m also curious what changes were made to the adaptive workout recommendations. Prior to the revamp of the application a number of months ago it seemed like the recommendation was a better fit than the workouts that are now being proposed. This may simply be that I don’t understand how to use the new app fully, but I have yet to see any training videos from Bowflex on how to get the most of the application. Along those lines you have a section titled programs. Are those actually programs? Or are they simply workout videos in a different section of the application? Like others have mentioned, it’s a decent price we pay for the subscription. I’m not sure I’ll renew if little things like preferences and how-to’s aren’t part of the package.
