I enjoy Busuu better than Duolingo

I am currently learning French with both Duolingo and Busuu. I enjoy Busuu better because it deals with every day practical needs, and the subjects are in order, and I can relate to what I learn. It also teaches you about Paris, and French customs as you go. It’s complete and it makes sense. It’s how I remember learning English. Duolingo instead, has generated some phrases that while they may be grammatically correct, don’t make any sense, like: “I ate an elephant”, or a bunch of other non-practical nonsense. Basically it’s important to relate to the meaning of what you are learning in order to retain it. The only thing I would improve in Busuu, is to be able to learn it directly from Castilian Spanish, because I’m learning it through English, which already not my first language.

I have tried several language learning apps and Busuu is my favorite, as its format most closely resembles a traditional educational approach. It is set up as a series of lessons, progressing from beginner to advanced.

If you already know a language but are looking to review it, Busuu offers a brief placement quiz to assess your current knowledge and suggest an appropriate starting point. Regardless of where you begin within the program or how far you advance, you always have access to previous lessons (including ones you "placed" out of) and can review them as many times as you like.

Busuu generates quizzes based on the lessons you complete - an important tool for reinforcing/reviewing what you have learned. There is a "Review" section that lists vocabulary you may need to study again and in-app notifications direct you to that section as necessary. The quizzes are offered in 2 formats: flashcards and writing, and you can select which you prefer for each quiz. You can retake the quiz a second time in the other format if desired.

Overall, an excellent tool for learning languages!

Best language learning app!

I have tried a large number of language learning apps and Busuu is, hands down, the best one. The skills test put me immediately into a challenging level. The lessons are appropriate and actually need thought and attention to complete. None of the other apps come close to this. Most of them are simple memorize and repeat. Busuu demands mental processing not just memorization.
Personally, I could do without the social interaction portion but I could see its appeal to other users.
