  • Latest v1.1 update loses iCloud

    Robert914

So my Mac, iPhone and iPad all used to work great with iCloud and Byword v1.0.3. Now, after updating, my iPad can't see any iCloud files, my iPhone can see about 6 of the files, but my Mac can still see all 93 files. What the heck????UPDATE: The 6 files visible on my iPhone are apparently only the 6 files I recently viewed on my phone which have synced local copies. So basically, no files are seen from iCloud on any of my iOS devices anymore.UPDATE #2: Ok, so after completely resetting my iCloud on all my devices I now can see the files on iCloud from all my devices. However, I can only *edit* the files or *open* the files that I created on the respective iPhone or iPad directly (not on another device). If I create a file on my MacBook, iPhone or iPad, it will properly sync to the file list in Byword and I can see the new file, but I cannot open that file on the other iOS device at all (but the MacBook can open any just fine). I get an error dialog that says: "Download Failed: Failed to download the document. Please check your internet connection and try again." I know I have internet, as it sync'd the new files to the device and I can read anything on the internet. Something is still broken with this latest Byword. I'm really disappointed, as one of the main reasons I purchased Byword for my Mac and iOS devices was that it had iCloud support, and it used to work flawlessly. Now it's completely useless.

  • Great app, but a few requests

Overall, Byword is a great app that has you covered on all platforms. However, I would like to see a few improvements that would make it a 5 star app:1. A few more font options. I don't want overkill since I know this isn't supposed to be a full blown word processor. But take a look at the Drafts app for a good template. In particular, Drafts offers Avenir (which I believe is now built into ios) and Tisa, as a sans serif and serif option, respectively. These are two of the most readable fonts available today and would be a nice upgrade for Byword.2. Better Markdown previewing. As others have commented, making the Markdown preview more prominent and easily accessible would be a good first step. In addition, the preview itself needs improvement. For example, when I preview in Mail I see the line spacing (after headers, for example) I would expect. But there's no space after a header in Byword's own preview. Drafts is another good template here -- they offer better Markdown previewing, and I would encourage Byword to follow their example.

First off, I love this app and upon downloading it, made it my go-to writing app. I've already written and published an eBook using Byword. I would like to keep it as my main writer's tool, but there are a few things making that hard to do. I'm mainly writing this in hopes the developers will read it and fix these so I can keep writing books with Byword. 1. At high word counts, typing slows down. For a fast typer like me, that means I may type a whole sentence without seeing anything on the screen. Then after a short delay, the sentence appears. This can range from short delays to seemingly long delays. It's not the Bluetooth keyboard, because the same thing happens with the iPad's onscreen keyboard. My current document is over 20,000 words and it's slow enough that I am going to have to start a new document. I've already had to do this before, and typing is speedy in every document until it reaches high word counts. If there's something I can do to fix this, or a setting I dont' know about, let me know and I'll remove this review. 2. There are random glitches with the spell checker and auto correct. Frequently it will not let me copy a chunk of text, the popup turns red and indicates a misspelled word. Even when there aren't any. Sometimes the red flag shows a misspelled word that I already deleted or changed, it's not even in the text anywhere but Byword is still showing it. This is always when selecting blocks of text, a paragraph or several. The whole selection turns pink, and a red flag tells me the supposedly wrong word. I can't copy when this happens. I have to restart Byword, then reselect the text, and then it works. 3. Would be great to organize documents in folders. Instead of just one long list on the left. Also a text search inside documents would be superb.

  • Good Sync, Attractive UI, Substandard Typographic Options

The developers have done a good job, and the app excels in some areas. If you want an app that can sync your documents over iCloud and has features for writing Markdown, Byword is a great choice. If you prefer to do your syncing with Dropbox, this doesn't blow the other options out of the water, and the choice will probably come down to personal preference more than anything.Pros:* iCloud syncing works well and I'm sure will get even more solid with future updates.* Good balance of features to support using Markdown without creating feature overload.* The app is attractive and simple to use. You won't need to dig around to much to learn everything that it can do.Overall there's no show stoppers, but some annoyances are:* Can't change font size: I admire the developers choice to keep the app preference-light, but not being able to change font size is pretty strange in a text editor.* Font choices are limited to four options, a sans-serif that's pretty likable, a monospace font (which might be alright at a smaller size), Helvetica and Georgia which are fine but not what I'd choose for writing long form.* There's only one, low contrast, theme. Unlike Byword for OS X — which has a light and dark theme — Byword for iOS has only a (low contrast) light theme. The toolbar buttons are especially low contrast. I could see someone with poor eyesight having a lot of trouble.

Byword has grown to almost everything I imagined it could be, and then some! The minimalist-inspired user interface is simple and easy to organise through the use of folders and subfolders. I'm the biggest fan of the Avenir font and open space I have to focus on my subject. A few things here and there that I found a little less intuitive include having to press return when naming the title, rather than simply tapping in the writing space - leaving me to repeat the process. The white interface is enjoyable, but I'd prefer the option to use a matte black interface like it's OS X counterpart as well. On that note, the price adds up when I see that I have to purchase a premium service in two respective operating systems. These premium purchases support blog publishing, but should simply be included pro bono, because it's just as resourceful as iCloud or Dropbox support.I just want to end by thanking the devs for such an awesome app. This is one of my favourite apps that I love sharing with friends. If you could consider some additional features, tailor this app for bloggers and writers alongside the newer coding features. And don't be afraid to ask for a decent download price rather than in-app purchases. I'm more enthusiastic about investing in an app that will enrich what I do rather than figure out how I'm going to find the care to purchase the same features again. It lingers there as an incomplete app on one of my devices instead. Best!

  • Only practical for Markdown users

Been using the Desktop version for several months now. Really enjoyed writing Rich text based documents on my computer with this app. When I finally bit the bullet and purchased the iOS Version, I unfortunately discovered after the purchase that the iOS version does not support Rich text. That detail was at the very bottom of the description and to be fair I made an assumption that the iOS version of the app would work the same as the desktop version. I can’t understand why rich text is not supported, and if I had known (I guess it’s my bad for not reading every single bit of description all the way to the very bottom) that I would be unable to sync those types of documents across devices, I would’ve gone with a different platform. Please Byword, if you’re reading this just add rich text support already, you’ll make your user base much happier and then we don’t have to write dumb reviews like this one...
