Description

Use your phone as a sextant for celestial navigation

CamSextant allows taking celestial object altitudes using your phone camera and sensors as a marine sextant. For celestial navigation. Point a celestial object and tap the image to capture the altitude and observation time.

Stars and planets are shown on screen in real time. Identify planets and the 150 brightest stars (Hipparchus catalog). The program can also talk the star names and altitudes.

Astronomic Position (AP) is automatically calculated once you have at least two sights. Calculate your astronomical position with less than 10 clicks. Perpetual nautical almanac.

You can take several altitudes of the same object. The average time/altitude is shown.

You can calibrate the sextant horizon by reading the sea horizon altitude. Click [Calibrate] button to save the correction. Calibration angle is subtracted from raw sensor reading.

If you have a marine sextant at hand, you can correct the altitudes captured by the phone and get serious celestial navigation work done.

Excellent app for setting up a telescope mount modeling mask

The app works great for setting up a sky mask for telescope mounts that have absolute encoders when used with modeling software for multipoint mount alignment.

Inaccuracies

Really cool, could be better. Tilting the phone left or right changes the angle measurement. Could use something to make sure the phone is level or correct for this left/right angle.
